im getting a BD in jan. so im building the cage now and getting all the necessities. tonight i have the cage 90% built, im baseing it off of those crossfiredragon enclosures. so ill be posting pics and stuff in this thread. i bought a heat lamp at walmart its a metal dome type and i bought a 75 watt flood light bulb to go in it, it seems very bright. on the box it says " natural light plus" so i figured it might be closer to real light, has anyone used this bulb and does it seem like good choice? heres a link to which one it is http://www.elightbulbs.com/catalog_product.cfm?source=GoogleBaseCSE&prod=PL147207
the price online says like 16 bucks, but at home depot it was only 7 bucks, isnt stuff usually cheaper online? hehe
in a couple days ill post how its comeing along ! ps. i bought the reptisun 10 bulb in a 36" fixture thanks to everyones good advice on here. and i just ordered those pink and blue rep-cal suppliments off ebay.
the only thing im changeing on the crossfire design is, one side has the rectangle vent thats a little bigger then the one they show in their pictures (going to be next to his basking spot i think) , and the opposite side i dont have a vent instead its a piece of plexi-glass because it faces the front door, i figured he would like to see out, but i still have 6 of those smaller round vents on the back board of the cage
What are you using for UVB? You didn't mention it.
Basking light can be an ordinary house lightbulb as long as you can get the temps up where they belong.
How about substrate? What do you plan on using on the bottom?
Can't wait to see pics.
hey there, i have a reptisun 10 36" bulb for the uvb. as far as substrate i have layed tiles down and probibly going to put paper towels down too. when its old enough i was probibly going to put a sand box area in there, but not yet
Sounds great! Hey I'm in Florida too. My Boga is outside right now getting her daily UVB. Check out my avatar photo to see it. I only turn on her UVB when she doesn't get outside, makes it last longer!!
i wanted to mention i bought the 36" ballast at home depot for around 12 bucks and the reptisun bulb for about 28 with shipping from petmountain.com, thats still cheaper than JUST THE BULB at the pet store lol, which was like 48 bucks if i remember right
well im getting close to being done, as you can see the top is not screwed down yet, as i wanted to make sure i get the fixtures right before i wanted to set it in stone. and i havent peeled off the plastic on the plexi glass. i still am going to add some decorative trim to it to try and make it a little more nice looking lol. i cant get the metal dome thing off the ballast because its makeing the temps too hot, i did my first temp test with the metal dome on and it reached like 120 something lol. so i will have to change the bulb unless i can figure out how to get it off. the tank is 48x24x24 . is there anything you can see that might need addressing?
lol ok , i stuck a 60 watt house bulb in it and now it only reads 89 degrees! so a 75 watt house bulb might be a nice in-betweener, ill see if i can find one
ok so im done... for now. its built. im gunna do some cool stuff in the inside but since im getting a baby im not going to do that stuff yet, ill even have to put a divider inside, and some basic things but all i need now is for my uvb bulb to come in the mail... though i am stuck with a predicament, the two stand things i was going to set the tank on look a bit.... awkward, i didnt judge the size well and the stands look like two little pillars. my question is does it look safe? because i bought a fabric to cover the bottom so you cant tell, but i tried rocking the tank and it seems secure. and i dont have any kids to worry about (other then a friend of mine, but we'll just have to tell them not to try climbing it) . so what are your thoughts? also i bought a new bulb, its a regluar house bulb buts its the "reveal" kind with bright white light at 75 watts and its now at 108 degrees on the hot side , im gunna see if that gets too hot also or what it does
