My bearded dragon has recently shown trouble opening his eyes and the area around his eyes seem swollen/puffy. There is no pus, discharge, or any signs of infection, but I don't kniw what is causing his eye to appear that way? I read that sometimes there eyes get puffy before shedding and he hasn't shed yet, but I'm worried it is something more. If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it!
The bearded may be going into a shed; eye bulging/eye popping is common when they are about to shed. This action has a few possible explanations. One such explanation is that it is thought to help loosen the skin around the face and make is easier to come off during shedding. Another explanation is that this action is similar to yawning in humans. Either way, eye bulging is not anything to freak out about.
Is he housed alone ? If not, be sure to separate . The likely culprit is sand in the eye. Take the sand out and get some sterile plain saline to gently rinse the eye. Use a Q-tip to VERY gently go over the corner of the eye to get the crud out. Then get the raw honey , dilute with a tiny bit of warm water + apply that twice a day. It has worked for 2 of my beardies in the past very quickly, it's an antimicrobial.
