Today I adopted a injured bearded dragon. An his tail has been damaged. Missing about 75% of it. There is a little part that looks like it might be drying out and falling off. Also his left back foot has injured toes and such. I need to know if this is exposed part of the tail what to do about it and if you think it will fall off I dont want to lose the litter guy he is probably about 3 months.
How horribly awful for that poor dragon!
Pictures would be helpful. If he has lost that much of his tail & it hasn't healed up yet, then
it is susceptible to infection. Is it still raw then at the end? I would try to get him to a vet so
they can take a closer look at the tissue. If it is darker in color then it is likely becoming or it
is already necrotic. If it is infected then the infection could travel upwards on the rest of the
tail & into his system to make him ill. It may or may not dry up & fall off though. It depends
on the severity of the injury & whether or not it's infected.
Are you putting any antibiotic ointment on him? You can use the ointment or raw, unpasteurized
honey on the area to help with any infection.
You can treat the other injured areas with ointment or the honey.
Has he eaten since you brought him home?
…. he'll need to be examined and started on antibiotics to prevent a life threatening systemic infection killing him.
A long course of antibiotics and likely daily application of sterile dressings to the injured tail and leg/s will be necessary.
Necrosis of injured soft tissues and bones is gangrene , there is no home remedy for this . Powerful antibiotics are needed and these are only available from a vet.
How is your dragon doing today, any improvements on the injuries thus far?
Have you been able to take him to a vet for them to look over his tail also?
Let us know how he is doing.
