I acquired a bearded dragon about 3 weeks ago. I've been trying to hold him but everytime I do, he runs away and seems anxious. Just this past week, it has gotten to the point where he tries biting me (it doesn't hurt, he's only about 12 weeks old) If i do manage to corner him and pick him up he kind of just "plays dead" and generally seems uncomfortable. I dont pick him up from above, because I've heard that they dont like that. I've also tried hand feeding him, and he never goes for that. I'm just worried that hes going to grow up to be unhappy and aggressive.
Hey! im glad youre into your new dragon!
I wouls suggest just letting him get to know you on his own. Dont corner him, thats the worst. Imagine a big ass hand reaching for you and you have to cower in a corner. Not cool. Im sure your dragon will come along. I would suggest just putting your hand in there and just let him sense you in there. He will learn that your hand is not associated with danger. Start to just pet him lightly while in cage. Dont pick up. Just pet. If he runs away, leave him alone and try again later. Im pretty sure he will come around, just at his pace. When youre able to pet him in the cage and he no longer runs. Put your hand under his chest while keeping other hand lightly on its back. Always support the hind legs and tail, the unstability freaks them out and they will tail whip trying to get balance. Once hes on you, just let him be. Let him get used to your heart beat and your warmth. He will come around. Just be real patient! Dont rush him, let him trust you. And if you really like him and arent scared, he will know. Good luck and happy dragon keeping!
