Having recently created a fake rock for our beardie, Miss-T (see post here), we decided to create another one for the other beardie my partners mum looks after - Tassy.
If you look at the linked thread, you can see that most of the detail is lost by using expanding foam to cover the whole thing (we lost the nozzle!), so this time we bought a fresh tin with a nozzle and took things easy.
The shape after cutting polystyrene to shape and foaming:
The underside. Tried to make as much room as possible, especially under the stairs, as he is quite a big beardie:
After grouting (can't remember what layer this was):
The underside after grouting:
We sieved some sand on top (a bit much, perhaps :lol after applying the first coat of waterproof PVA as a sealer. For some reason it stuck everywhere we wanted, except the stairs... weird!
The finished product, though the PVA isn't quite dry. Put it in the tank just for these photos :
Hope you like. This is a comparison between the first one we did, and this one:
I don't think the finish looks half as good as it did on the previous rock - it doesn't look as 'rock like'. But I'm really keen on the shape of it. Thanks for looking!
We feed her on the other side of the tank and normally the crickets don't have any chance of getting past the ferocious beast towering over them. A couple have found their way under the rock but they're gobbled up once we lift the rock up and she sees them.
So you used grout to cover the styrofoam? What was the seal that you used? I want to do something like this for mine but don't want it to be toxic to him. How many layers of grout did you use? And is it the same kind of grout that you use when laying tile? How long did the whole process take? Thanks!
