We got our recheck results back this afternoon and Leo’s still showing per the vet a “high” number of Coccidia. Leo is round 5 months and went from 74g at first vet check in early December to 144 this week.
Back on Ponazuril for 7 days starting tomorrow. We have him in a quarantine tank on paper towels with a resin hide/basking, resin “branch”, and bowls. We pick up poop asap and clean tank every time. I stream clean and use rescue vet cleaner. Any suggestions or recommendations? TY.
On a positive note pinworms are to a safe level. So only one med this go around.
I went through this with my first rescue beardie.
I can definitely say that it’s not uncommon for them to need more than one course to clear up a issue like this so that could very well be the case here.
Enclosure hygeine is very important for helping get rid of this and avoid reoccurrence in the future.
What you’ve said you do for the enclosure cleaning is perfect. Is the cleaner you use F10 veterinary disinfectant? If so that’s the one I use and if you get the little concentrate bottle of it that you mix up with water there is a chart on the back that will tell you what ratio to use when mixing it up for specific things like bacteria’s, parasites, viruses etc.
Another thing I did with my guy was whenever he poop in addition to cleaning the enclosure I would also
bathe him and give him a gentle scrub with a soft toothbrush then a gentle rinse with fresh water. Doing this just makes sure that their body is also clean so they’re not wandering around the freshly cleaned enclosure with potential poop parasites on their butts to spread around.
As for the antiparasitic medication it was a while ago for my guy so I can’t recall if the top of my head the name of what he had but it could have been Flagyll. I can take a look at his medical notes and get back to you about that if you want. I do know though that whatever it was my guy was on it did clear up his issue with coccidia after the one round but again I know his vet did say to me that it’s not uncommon for beardies with coccidia to need multiple courses to clear it up.
Just keep monitoring his weight through this as when they’re dealing with something like this they can drop weight pretty quick.
I also see you currently have him on paper towels. If you can get them puppy training pads make be a better option as they are thicker and their underside stops liquids going all the way through which would help to avoid the parasites reaching the floor of the tank and you can just bundle the pad/s up and bin them without things getting drippy since this issue tends to create a ‘poop soup’ sort of situation.
