We just got our first beardie about two weeks ago. I was never fond of reptiles (we'll chalk it up to my own ignorance) and then I went to a "reptiles alive" birthday party for my nephew and one of the animals was a bearded dragon and my son and I fell in love with him. After about a month of research about how to care for them - we purchased Baby. We are calling her a she for now because of the way she acts but she's too little to tell - only about 5 1/4in. We weren't told her age by the pet store but judging by her size, I'm thinking she's about 6 weeks old. I've found this site super helpful - thanks so much for sharing your wisdom with us newbies. It's very obvious that Baby is the new baby in the family, by the way we've rearranged everything to accomodate her but I wouldn't change a thing. Right now she's in a 10 gallon tank, but I'm curious as to how big I should let her get before moving her to a 40 gallon breeder? I don't want her to have too much trouble catching her crickets. Thanks again for sharing!!!
I personally think that whole "Trouble catching crickets" thing is nonsense. Oh, get the bigger tank when she is as long as your current one :3 so 12 inches about?
We've had our baby for 3 weeks now and we put her in a 40g breeder from day one! lol They say if they're having "trouble" with "finding" anything, to just section it off. Ours did/does great, but I know every BD is different! lol
Enjoy your baby and be sure to take lots of pics! It's fun to look back at them when they get bigger! ^^
Thanks for the replies. I think I might go get a 40 gallon breeder soon. She has absolutely no problem catching crickets right now. Besides I have the 10 gallon so if she has issues I can put her back in there for feedings. I think she could use some more space to run around and play.
@AchiKat - I have been taking tons of pics. I compare all of this to when my son was born. I was overjoyed and couldn't talk enough about him or share enough pics with everyone. I'm sure that my family and friends are tired of hearing about Baby already but oh well they'll get used to it.
Just yesterday her skin broke for her first shed with us. After reading on here about how they act and what they look like, I've been saying for a few days, that she was getting ready to shed. She always loves coming out to play but the past few days not so much. She's also very skitterish, which she hasn't been since day 3 or 4 of us having her. Now I know for sure that it's shedding - I'm thankful for that although I do hate seeing her stressed. I put her in the bath last night, that seemed to help her some.
Just wanted to post an update on Baby. We have now had her for almost 3 months and she is doing fabulous!!!! She has grown a little over 7 inches and is now just over a foot long. Thanks to everyone on here for sharing their advice - I had no idea what I was doing until I researched on this site.
Of course what would an update be without pictures so here you go.....
She was so good for our photo shoot.
Go Ravens!!!
One of her favorite places to climb on her brother's head.
