Hey all! I’ve been using a 150 watt heat bulb for some time, however I noticed my beardie started avoiding it. Since this, I switched it to a 100watt - which he seems to like better. But it’s not getting his enclosure hot enough. Does anyone have any tips? When I mount the 150watt bulb, the temperature fluctuates a lot throughout the day.

How hot are his temps with the 150 watt vs the 100?

100watt: Basking is 98-104 (takes an hour to reach proper temps in the morning). Leaves middle gradient at 87-91

150watt: Basking is 105-107 with middle gradient at 90-95

Oddly the cool side always stays at about 78

is it possible to just lower the basking spot and keep using the 150 watt?

I’ve tried mounting it and then it fluctuates a lot throughout the day. The middle temp then also drops. He also doesn’t like to sit under the 150watt.

This temperature fluctuation is just due to the higher watt. The thing you can do with that 150 watt heat bulb is, fit it on the area where you switch on the bulb rarely.

thats a really cute setup and his hammock is already pretty low. do you have any extra bulbs to set in the middle/warm side of the tank to raise that a bit so you can continue with the 100 watt basking one and still have the warm side in the 90s? You can also try lowering his hammock a little more and keep with the 150 and see if he will like it more if its still a bit cooler in the basking spot but your temps can still be more ideal.

Hello,

That is a nice looking tank!
Are you using a digital probe to double check the temperatures? Be sure that the overall, ambient
temperature of the tank on average doesn't get more than around 82F or so. They can get overheated
& not want to bask because they aren't able to cool off properly.
How is his appetite right now?

So, today, I moved his hammock and replaced it with a ramp that resides slightly lower and has a larger surface area. He seems to like this alongside the 150watt!! I think despite the hammock being very low it was still a little too close. He jumped onto the ramp immediately and basked for over an hour! Thanks for you help!

Hey! I'm planning on ordering a 4x2x2 for my next beardie but I'm worried about lighting. I have a UVA and a UVB but they are small (the UVA just being a bulb and the UVB being 12 ish inches?) My house is drafty so I need a strong light that puts off quite a good amount of heat, any suggestions?
