Chris, Its so nice to see that dragon treated so well. We should all aspire to be keepers like Chris. Tim

    SAND GOOD OR NOT!!??

Sand is only dangerous to a beardie when the keeper lacks the knowledge, experience, and understanding of how a dragon uses his environment to satisfy needs. In a dry, warm environment, a dragon will have a hard time passing sand, bugs, or anything it puts in its mouth. If you have a screen...

    Need help quick!!

Hello, I would put the triple antibiotic ointment on it and leave it alone. Reptiles have amazing immune systems. They heal rather easily from serious injuries (like lacerations, getting their toes and tails bit off, even a limb). The antibacterial ointment will help prevent infections, but...

    Pinkies???!!!

Two of my females eat them. My male doesn't want anything to do with them. I don't have a set schedule as to when I feed them to my dragons. Maybe once every two weeks. Sometimes more, sometimes less. When I do feed pinkies, I feed two f/t rat pinkies per female. Most issues people have with...

    RUNS...

Its funny how ten people can see the same thing and yet you can get ten different answers on what your seeing :) My opinion is that your seeing a dragons running on instinct. What I mean is, if you put an animal in a room where he is not accustomed to the surroundings, I feel you'll see him...

How old should babies be before selling?

I wait until they're 6-8 weeks old. Other species of reptiles are usually shipped earlier, but with beardies usually being bought by inexperienced keepers, I prefer to wait and give the dragon a better chance. However, if the person purchasing the beardie/beardies is experienced and a good...

    Floodlights vs basking bulbs

I'd recommend 45 or 50 watt halogen indoor/outdoor flood bulbs or 65 watt incandescent flood bulbs. The key is to use a lower watt bulb and move the basking spot closer to the bulb, not to use higher watt bulbs and basking sites further away.

Earth, turf or other organic substrate

Idvictor, A 55 is too narrow for a dragon. 4x2 should be the minimum. I would even recommend a 40 breeder over a 55. I use a dirt/sand mix in my enclosures. To successfully apply the dirt, other aspects of husbandry need to be improved as well. The dirt has to be deep (six inch minimum)...

Reptile Shows getting as bad as Pet Stores

Hello, We had a table at the Matamoras, Pa show for a couple years about 12-13 years ago. We always tried to explain care to buyers, but it wasn't always so easy. In hind sight we should of made a care sheet. Expos can get hectic. Tables can be swarmed and vendors have to answer tons of...

    Substrate Mixture?

Hey GlueStick, I would start with a 50/50 mix. This way you can add more sand, or dirt, later on. When and how much water your going to have to add depends on the enclosure, light bulbs, the dirt, and air movement. I would add water when the first 2-3 inches dries out. If you put a piece...

    Substrate Mixture?

Reptilianboy831, When you do build a new enclosure, make sure you put the vents on the side, a couple inches above the substrate. You want a solid top with the lights mounted on the inside. No open or screen tops. If you do use a screen top the air movement will rapidly dry out your enclosure...

    Substrate Mixture?

The 40 breeder in the pic has topsoil/playsand mix. I have the worms in the 5'x30"x30". I should put some in the other dirt enclosures. I use sand for the babies. I keep the sand moist. I have more humidity in the baby enclosures than I do in the sub-adult and adult enclosures. I allow...

    Substrate Mixture?

My largest is 5'x30"x30" This is a 40 breeder. I have another 40 breeder that looks similar to the other one except its got about 8 inches of sand in it. I also have a 4x2x2 filled with dirt that looks like the first 40 breeder. I have to take pics of them. Heres a pic of a baby...

    Substrate Mixture?

Top soil has tons of sticks and rocks in it. I use an old screen top to sift through it. It works better if the soil is dry. Its a slow and tedious process. Don't bake the sand or top soil. You don't want to kill the bacteria. If you do, the dirt will spoil, and you'll be re-sifting new soil...
