Everything you ever wanted to know about "t5" and "Ho"....

Yes Vicki, It is "General Information" provided by a vendor of the lamps who is promoting them for sale. If the information being presented is incomplete and can cause a danger to the animal it needs to be challenged. The UV Index pictures posted a few posts back by Eli22 show UV index...

Everything you ever wanted to know about "t5" and "Ho"....

I did click on the links. But the information they provided was minimal. The charts were unlabeled so I am guessing the values were UVB? or were they UVA+B? Where are the UV Index values? And a couple of pictures of one viv brighter than another? La De Da. I think the dimmer vivs looked...

Everything you ever wanted to know about "t5" and "Ho"....

Todd, Don't take this the wrong way but there are some things that you are stating that don't make any sense. 1. No single HO T5 or Double HO T5 tube is going to come close to natural sunlight either. Not in terms of intensity or spectral distribution. 2. 12% and 10% of what? It is an...

Everything you ever wanted to know about "t5" and "Ho"....

Sorry Todd, but you did not really answer the question. To quote Dr. Baines herself from the compact lamps unsafe thread at the top of this forum... If a T8 lamp produces an even low level of background UVB suitable for lighting for the shade method. Wouldn't increasing the background level...

    Zilla Desert 50UVB blub????

That thread is ancient and is based off the problems with the original Zilla bulb and not the updated one that has been available for years. There is nothing wrong with the Zilla desert 50 and it performs as well as the Reptisun at producing UVB.

Everything you ever wanted to know about "t5" and "Ho"....

What's the advantage to using an HO T5 lamp over a standard T8? I mean if the beardie is getting all the UVB it needs from a standard T8 Reptisun 10.0 running at 32 watts (48" length) why would I want to change to a higher wattage (54 watt HO T5) lamp? If there was no advantage in UVB then...

Will this lighting be OKAY for now?

The Zilla Desert 50 produces on average about 50 microwatts of UVB at 12". A Zoomed lamp is rated by the percentage of light output of the lamp in the UVB range. Unfortunately there is no way to quantify that amount of UVB without a UVB meter. One of the big disadvantages of a percentage...

    Zilla bulb...

Ok. The 8" distance was probably too close for the Zilla lamp. They work better on deeper habitats where the lamps are further away.

    Zilla bulb...

Not necessarily. How old was your last bulb and how far from the lamp is your basking area? An old bulb produces much less UVB than a new one and if your animal has adapted itself to a low UVB it will need to close it's eyes until it adjusts to the light. Also a Reptisun only produces about...

Zilla Desert 50 UVB 18" flourescent tube

There is a very strong degree of favoritism for the Zoomed light on this site I agree. That doesn't mean the new Desert 50 lamps are a bad lamp. If you ask, most of the people who bad mouth the Desert 50 lamps have never used one or are bitter about the bad experiences with the pre 2008 lamps...

Were you having problems with the Desert 50 bulb?

Zilla Desert 50 UVB 18" flourescent tube

We aren't talking about compacts here. These are normal T8 linear tube lamps.

Zilla Desert 50 UVB 18" flourescent tube

You could put the Zoomed lamp in it. The lamps are interchangeable.

Zilla Desert 50 UVB 18" flourescent tube

There is a lot of old information on the forums about these lamps. There was a problem with these lamps when they initially came out in 2006 and early 2007. They were pulled from distribution in September 2007 and reformulated and released in late 2008. The new lamps have an output similar to...

That would work out really well. Nothing wrong with that at all.

    R-Zilla Desert 50 T-5 Slim 20"

That fixture does not have a lens. I thought you had a Coralife fixture. The Zilla T5 lamps are Normal Output (NO) and are 28 watts. You can run them in an HO T5 fixture but the ballast will overdrive the lamp. This will cause an increase in light output but will shorten the life of the...

    R-Zilla Desert 50 T-5 Slim 20"

I would use just one and also use a 6700K or 10K daylight with it. That is how the Zilla fixtures now come. This makes the fixture a lot brighter visibly and helps restrict pupil dilation. You will get plenty of UVB from just the single lamp but I would remove the lens. Andy

    R-Zilla Desert 50 T-5 Slim 20"

Whether the beardie closes an eye or not is not really a good test of a lamp. Bearded Dragons can see UV light and the side closest to the UV light is going to look brighter than the other to the dragon. No matter what brand of lamp is used. It should also be pointed out that the lens blocks...

    zilla desert 50 slimline uvb

I think you may be thinking of the older ESU 7% lamp that was in the original slimline fixtures. The new fixtures use the Zilla Desert 50 lamp which gives off plenty of UVB.

    zilla desert 50 slimline uvb

The new Desert 50 lamps are a very good bulb and have a similar output to the Zoomed lamps. I would recommend removing the lens to get the most UVB transmission as the lens does block it considerably but the lens is required by UL safety regulations. There was a problem with Zilla lamps in...
