should i even bother with crickets

My bearded dragon is 3 months old. he eats dubias and crickets and occasionally hornworms. i used to feed bsfl but they never got eaten and just would all turn black and seem to die. i have a container of them sitting in my floor for weeks and not a single fly so thats why i assume they just die. he eats both dubias and crickets fine but he definitely like crickets more. he'll eat around 5 dubias in the morning then stop until i offer the crickets which he eats 10+. throughout the day he eats crickets but his dubias are just depending on his mood. the problem is dubia.com doesnt ship crickets so we have to go out and get them. despite buying around 12 dozen at a time he goes though them in like less than a week. they also dont live long so im scared to buy to many at a time. I also just personally dont like them due to the noise and smell. they also are better at escaping. if i took the crickets away would he pick up on eating the dubias to even it out or should i continue both?

Try not feeding the crickets they are less filling - the crickets he has to eat more of- they are a dirty feeder- dubias are a better cleaner feeder and he is not eating as many cuz they fill him up quicker- also what size are the dubias? You don't want them to big for him --

i believe they are the 5/8 inch ones. they fit between the space of his eyes. hes currently almost out of crickets. he has like a feeding left and then ill go without them for a bit and see how he does

It's always best to offer multiple feeder insects if you can.

You never want to rely on just 1 insect. Diets high in Dubia roaches increase the chances of dragons developing gout due to the high uric acid levels of the roaches. Dubia roaches should be fed alongside other insects to help lower the UA ingested. Proper hydration is also important with combating UA.

If you can keep doing dubias and crickets, great. If you're sick of crickets like many people get, you can always look into other feeder options like silkworms, mealworms, superworms, hornworms, and butterworms.

Larger dragons many times won't see BSFL as food, unless you get the large size and they are really active. They are a great feeder if you can make it work.

I wish we could buy and sell grasshoppers here in the good ole USA . My dragons go nuts for them. ..... i think they would go after a grasshopper faster than a hornworm lol

i was under the impression that mealworms/superworms were bad for babies? if not though superworms will be great because my hedgehog also eats them

update

so im getting superworms on thursday but im a little worried hes not eating enough. i know karrieree said he wont be eating as many as he will crickets because they are more filling but im still concerned. in the morning he eats around 5 roaches which is how many he used to eat +crickets. during the day hes only eating around 3 during each feeding and he tends to skip a feeding. hes shedding right now so he might be feeling off in general but his diet for bugs is normally good. i dont mind going back on crickets if he needs them but im also wondering if he used to over eat when given crickets. he used to eat like 10-15 each feeding and his belly would get round. should i give it more time or get him back on crickets soon?

Since your beardie is only 3 months old which means he is still a baby you should only be feeding him mini sized Dubia roaches and mini sized crickets. So maybe you should wait till he is 4 months old because then he would be a juvenile. So when he reaches 4 months old here are some insects you can feed him: crickets, Dubia roaches, Calciworms, Silkworms, Phoenix worms, Reptiworms, Superworms, butterworms and hornworms.

thank you i ordered the ones from dubia.com that are like barely as long as a quarter which im pretty sure is ok for him. hes 11 inches long so hes not super tiny anymore. when i get them in person if i feel like they are to long i can just give them to my hedgehog. what book is that it seems really helpful?

It is called ‘the complete bearded dragon care book’ by Jacquelyn and illustrated by Elnor Johnson. I would give the book a rating 5/5, really helps me with taking care of my beardie. This book was the one that actually made me become a member of the bearded dragon community.
