Hi Everyone!

I'm looking to adopt another dragon, especially since there are so many dragons out there that need good homes. I recently asked an owner if their beardie had adeno, which I know is very contagious and don't want to compromise my healthy male (no intention of breeding).

What are some questions I should ask? And how can I prevent bringing a potentially adeno-positive dragon into my house?

So far, I asked, if she's definetly female, about recent checkups, any egg laying issues, the breeder's name that they bought her from.

Thanks!

You could get with @Drache613 for a adv test kit and test it before you bring it home

Thanks for the quick reply! How much are they?

Can I also ask for your opinion? I just contacted the owner for pictures. Unfortunately he was very sick in the hopsital, but the tank pictures... my God, it was covered in ****!!! He insists he usually keeps the tanks clean, but I just dont want my beardie to catch anything. What's the best way to go about adopting in a healthy, safe way for your current beardie?

Oh, not to mention she had a history of an upper respitory, which is concerning

I wouldn't bring a new one into your home unless you have a quarantine room and follow a procedure where you isolate one of them and then transfer him to the room once you get the new one & he's healthy after testing.

What do you mean.?

Separation of the beardies.
Sanitization.
Tracie sells the cheapest ADV test kits.

Yes! I plan on separating and I do have a safe room for quarantine. I've also read that when an animal is in quarantine you handle their food/clean up last. Lots of hand washing. What I meant was the owner told me she had a respiratory infection at one point, which was kinda red flag to me. What's involved with the kit? Isn't that a vet only thing? 🤣

I'd check with @Drache613
I'm not 100% sure about the respiratory infection.
And Tracie runs a website with the kits & directions.

From what i gather it's a swab for their cloaca. The other option would be to drop a fecal sample at a local vet. Price check them though, I've seen post of vets trying to charge well over a hundred bucks, the most I've ever paid is 48.
As long as the R.I. has been treated and resolved that shouldn't be an issue, but if the dragons habitat was not clean, parasites really could be. Some like Coccidia is extremely hard to treat, i would absolutely get a fecal before i brought it home.
In the mean time if you have access you could clean up it's habitat and start getting it ready before you bring it home.
P. S. I'm rooting for the dragon, it sounds like it really needs help.

She doesn't sell RI kits they don't exist.
She sells ADV kits.

Respiratory infections are much more difficult to treat if given the proper breeding environment for bacteria and moisture in the atmosphere.
From my experience.

The coccidia is sometimes easily resolved as long as you treat the environment & sterilize it.

The kit is for Adenovirus.
Tracie sells it on her website.

I've run into problems where it's like I was sent a sick dragon.
My beardie at home got sick with a couple of parasites.

So be careful.

Then it flipped and my beardie had a respiratory infection from the house I was living in.
Then gave she gave it to one of the reptiles I bought locally.
& I handed him into a rescue, and she told me he's been rehomed.

The other 2 I'm not sure. The girl came down with severe RTI.

separation & proper hygiene is key in the beginning.
What I do is test the dragons.

ADV is transferrable.
RTI's are hard to treat; & can also be transferred somehow.

I'm liking the upgrade And I'm sure your beardie loves it.!
Those are 100 bucks cheaper than the one I bought.
I should have looked into it.
Good deal on a tank.

Hello,

Are you wanting to bring a new dragon into your home? If you would like to test that one, you can
sign up on my Adeno page at:

www.thepats.info

The test for Adeno is $21 so very affordable! It is easy to do at home & non invasive as well. It
is simply a swabbing that you do on the stool, so no need to even have to touch the swab on him
at all. There is no stress involved at all.
Have you brought the dragon home yet, or are you still deciding?

Hi Tracie!

Thanks for reaching out. I found a much healthier and more respectful owner that I'd like to buy from. I plan on quarantining her in a separate room with paper towels lining the bottom for now for easy cleanup and hygiene.

Anything else I should know?

The routine of care , as someone else mentioned, is to care for your current healthy dragon first and then take care of the new dragon. That way you won't accidentally transfer any parasite/contagious illness from your new dragon to Drogon.

It should all work out though, it will be exciting to get a new scaly homie !
