Dear Humans en beardies!,

I adopted my bearded dragon 4 weeks ago from my job as the ones responsible were not experienced enough to care for him, bad lighting, bad temps, bad diet, malnourished, dehydration, bad appetite (not eating veggies, simetimes fruit whuch was offered too much and now im trying too safe this gentle 8 years old?? Beardie. I owned snakes in the past and even successfully bred with them a couple of times. Last weeks deepdiving into beardie's and learn how sensitive they are and conditions really need to be near perfect on every aspect for them to prevent disease.

I would like to know your opinion on Mango's mouth, I've been contacting vets and will try to get him what he needs asap and it would help me to understand the best possible options a vet could provide too be sure the vet won't make any mistakes as al reptile vets in the Netherlands are mostly treating cats and dogs and possibly are not always up to date with the most recent techniques.

His teeth and gums are colored brown and yellow, the white stuff you see is calcium powder, also there is an abcess below the jaw. I have been treating it with diluted betadine, and testing chlorhexidine 0.12% (from a vet ment as mouth was for cats and dogs) so far i believe the diluted betadine is more effective. Before treating his mouth daily his mouth was slimy ofte had thick of white/ yellowish substance which i believe is slime/ pus mixture, the gums seem to heal as before it looked like there was none.

My main question is helo identify the exact problem and best possible treatments, secondary, until treatment i need help with a feeding schedule until treatment, he does not eat veggies and rarely eats fruit. I do offer him babyfood with 1/3 water dropping it on his nose, 50% of the time he will eat. I offer him salades daily in the morning and after 2 hours i remove it ad rehydrate it in icecold water then offer it to the dubia roaches and superworms to gut load them, today repashy supervite and repashy supercal lod, i just mixed an small ammount of both with little water and injected it into dubia females. I daily try to make him drink by dropping water on his nose to keep him hydrated while always keeping a close watch on his skin elasticity.
Bearde dragons are new too me and read/ observed a lot since his arrival.

How often should i give him the supervite or is it possible to give it daily for the first week as he never had a multivit and is malnourished?
I orded new lighting (arcadia 5.0 12% 39w kit)
Sorry for being a bit all over the place and i hope we can create some focus in this chaos together.

Thank you! Ihave contacted 3 vets specialized in the netherlands within 100 km range, they all agreed on me sending an email containing al info about mango, the enclosure conditions, symptoms, the positive results of cleaning his teeth and gums with diluted betadine or chlorhexidine.
Mostly im interested in their strategy to attack his problems like, their anesthetic choises. If the abcess has to be removed what can i ask the vets to be sure they know what they are doing.

It may take time to establish a healthy diet and routine, so keep up what you are doing. At 8 years old, it's important to include plenty of vegetables in the diet along with some insect protein. Crunchy shelled bugs like roaches might help with the buildup around the teeth, but I think in this case there may be some infected tissue adding to the problem. I think that the best thing you can do for now is to keep the teeth and gums clean and see if they start to heal up a bit on their own with proper lighting and diet. My vet suggested using maxiguard gel as an oral cleanser, but I think the diluted betadine will have about the same effect. When the vet treated one of my dragons for gum disease, they were able to cut some of the infected tissue from his mouth/gums and advised keeping the area clean with the maxiguard while it healed. This seemed to help a bit and the infection/inflammation was reduced. I would be careful not to get too aggressive with treatment at first unless you notice problems eating such as signs of pain or avoidance of all foods which could lead to bigger problems. If you don't see these problems, I'd get the lighting set up and keep gums clean and watch for progress over the next few months.

Hey guys,

Its has been 7 weeks since Mango was relocated to live with me. First of all thanks for your advice! Second, apologies for this late response, my grandmother passed away a couple of weeks ago and i have been very busy organizing the funeral.

I would like to share an update on Mango's road to recovery and share the opinion of the specialized vet a week ago.
I'm just wondering is it alright to post an update in the ER forum? Or should this forum only be utilized for acute emergencies? I'm also planning to properly introduce Mango, her story and her road to recovery after 2 months in my care in another forum ;)

Hello,

Sorry to hear about your Grandmother. You are in
the Netherlands? That has to be challenging to find
a good vet there.
The abscess definitely needs to be addressed especially
due to where it is located.
Continue to wash out the mouth to keep it clean using
the diluted betadine. It doesn't look too bad but a lot
of it should clear up once he gets healthier. So much
of their issues are caused by poor nutrition. Mango has
a great chance now that you have taken him in.
Is his appetite improving?

What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
