It's now been 12 months since we got our 1st bearded dragon, it's time for us to introduce Kai! Over the last year, this forum has been a helpful resource for us as new BD owners so thank you to the beardeddragon.org community. We never thought we would own a reptile but Kai has been the best pet ever for our kids!

Our beardie is unusually chill, are they all like this? If it wasn't for her need for heat/UV, she would literally be around us 24/7. Kai loves playing with the kids, meeting other humans, taking baths, showers, car rides, going to the beach, the store, do nothing, watch TV... pretty much everything the kids like to do.

We uploaded a short clip of Kai's last 12 months with us to share with our friends & the community, hope you enjoy meeting her in our video! Click the link below to watch:

That is a great video, one thing though, at one point he is swimming, that is a really bad idea. They use the same muscle group to walk and to breathe they can't do both at the same time, and swimming is about the same as walking and they can drown extremely quickly. Just be really careful with water, it shouldn't be deeper than their elbows.

Wow, thanks for the info about the breathing. We've only let him float / swim 5-15 seconds at a time and always supervised of course, Kai seems to enjoy it but is that still a horrible move if it's brief & watched closely?

I'm slightly surprised to hear it's that's not safe only because I've seen beardies swim online quite a bit, but I know I shouldn't trust everything others are doing online... we know not to let him swim in a pool for sure but we occasionally let him paddle from one end to the other in the bathtub. Curious to hear more opinions or experiences about this!

If your going to let him swim, make sure he is never unattended and that the water on the shallow end is shallow enough for him to keep his head out. I agree some beardies do like to swim, but it is dangerous. They can aspirate very quickly, their respotory system is pretty simple compared to ours so if your going let him, just stay close and be read to rescye him if he gets tired 🙂

Oh ok that's good to hear, we've never let her swim for more than 15-20 seconds tops so she's never unattended.

I noticed I accidentally said "him" above which led you to say "him/he" too... we assumed Kai's a boy for a good 6 months haha up until it became pretty obvious she's a girl so I might be all over the place with the pronouns! Just as confusing as real life these days I guess

Lmao, no worries. When my girlfriend first got Zen, he was named Pandora because she the Zen was a girl lol.

I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

i feel so sad reading your about me 😢
Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
