Another issue

We've encountered another issue with our new tank. It's an AP Cages T10, super nice, 90 gallons. (48x24x15) its the same height as our first 40 gallon. But the back and sides are solid black pvc. As a result, right where his basking light shines, the little circle reads up to 125, HOWEVER, whenever we touch the spot, it feels nice and warm. Certainly doesn't feel 125, but the thermometer will read a much lower reading outside of the circle of light.

Does that make any sense.? What can we do to lower the temperature, if it's really reading 125. It's not reallu bothering him and we've been checking for burns, which there are none.

Is this air temp?

Surface temp of the floor. Probe is reading 95, but if I put it directly in the circle of light, it'll get to 105 or so. But, like I said, it doesn't feel hot at all. Even with his carpet on there, it's still reading 120s and makes no sense.

That circle of light is currently reading 114 when I point the thermometer at it. But the rock beside the driftwood is 97, and his basking items that are by the door is 99 and he himself is reading 96. It's just that center spot for some reason, but it just feels nice and warm when I touch it.

Ok for accurate purposes please use a digital probe thermometer- I am thinking the material for the driftwood is throwing the IR gun off--- which happens --- get a reading w/ the probe then we need to figure out of anything needs to be done

We do use a probe. I keep it hanging just above one of his basking spots. It reads about 95-97. I use a forehead thermometer that reads room temps for the surface temps of the items and the floor. Even before the driftwood, that center spot was reading up to 127. That's why I'm so confused, because it's the same height as our other, with the same flooring. (The carpet) and it doesn't even feel that hot. Certainly not almost 130. If I move the probe over to the center spot of light, it'll jump up to 106 or so. Should I get a light stand to put some distance, maybe that'll bring down that temperature.?

You can or swap out the driftwood for a different piece and get a temp off of that - see what it reads before doing anything else- you want to rule out the material on the driftwood -

It's not the driftwood, it was super high when there was nothing but his usual stuff in there, just in that circle of light, but right outside of it, it drops a solid 10 degrees.

What your seeing is the actual temp of the light (air) in that area. That is the spot where the light is most concentrated. That is very likely a legitimate reading as it lowers as you move outward. That is the temp your beardie is going to feel if he bask there. Thats why we recommend the probe type thermometers. You can be more pin point with it. I would use a different thermometer to double check the accuracy. If that is the true temp its pretty hot.

Ok -- well you can try a stand then and raise and lower it as needed

I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
