Disappointment

It seems the universe is against me lately. I have a 40 gallon tank for my 3 month Toothless. It's s great tank, but it opens on the top and you have to lift the lid and slide it back and then stick your arm down in. It's not hinged or anything but does fit it perfectly. I hate this lid. It gets caught, I've scratched myself on it and it sometimes bangs against the tank, which startles Toothless.

We were supposed to go get a front opening 36x18x18 yesterday but we show up and the tank is actually a 20 gallon. Strike one.🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀

We were supposed to go look at an exoterra front opening tank we found on Craigslist. 100$ for a 36x18x18. Yeah, it's only a few inch difference than this one but it's /front/ opening. We go to look at the bank account and several bills that were supposed to be taken out days ago were done all at once today and it made it overdrawn so we can't get it now and it'll probably be gone when we can. Strike two.🤦‍♀️

And /then/, I mention the situation to my dad, just sort of in passing conversation type of way. And he responds with how he could lend me the money for it for now, but makes me feel bad in the process for...not asking for money, I guess.? Strike three.🤦‍♀️

I'm over today and its only 11:30am. 😩

Take the top off the tank if you can--- show me how its set up and we can look at getting the lighting adjusted w/ either the top off or half way off for now -- dont give up - tomorrow is another day

I'll need a hook or light stand thing to take the top off since his lights are in domes.

An upside, I guess, is we did get a digital thermometer with a probe (I think it's the right one) but I'm not sure where it's supposed to be placed

What are you using for a UVB? If you have a coil UVB in one of those domes it needs to be replaced w/ a long tube fixture- I can post links for those --- as far as the digital probe you want to check your surface basking temps every 10 days or so - place the probe where he sits for basking and wait for it to quit going up and get the temp -- you want temps 105-110 --- and yes a light stand over the basking area will work - you will haft to adjust it to the height of where your getting the 105-110 temps --

The air temperature is reading 96, the temp of his rock reads up to 107 at times, usually 105ish, his log stays right at about 100. I have a new 80 watt powersun uv and a new flukers 100watt basking bulb, neither coils. We're also gonna get a long tube when we can.i have the probe hanging right by where he sits the most often.

So two basking bulbs- air temp is good -- basking temps are good -- please get the long tube as soon as you can - they are a better UVB than the PowerSun - the screen is going to block 30% of the rays so getting that unblocked w/ the screen is going to be better UVB effect- distance and screen w/ the MVB's is a issue w/ UVB - that is why we always recommend a long tube fixture -- when you get the long tube I would recommend a Zoo Med w/ the Reptisun 10.0 T 5 or a Arcadia Pro T 5 w/ the 12% bulb -- those seem to be the best at this time -- they too will need to be placed correctly depending on your screen on the tank --

On Craigslist you can set up alerts for saved searches. You need an account to log into and its easier to set up on computer rather than your phone. You could set up an alert for "reptile enclosure" then you get an email when those are posted

Yeah, that's what we did. But there isn't really anyone selling a tank in our area. Or at least selling a tank without a beardie and we just aren't ready for a second one just yet.

That's what we were looking at, but we just have to wait for our finances to straighten out, since they're almost 100$.

I found some arm hook things to hang the lights for like 20$, so I was gonna get a set and take the lid off. I'm afraid he'll figure a way out, though😅

What lights are you going to hang? The domes you can use a stand from Pet Smart
try putting the screen half way on or 3/4 on and place the other dome on that one and have one dome hanging above - those are adjustable so if your getting correct temps w/ the MVB use that one --- when you get the UVB you wont need the MVB just your basking bulb --

I figured hanging both domes, if possible. Should I keep the basking light on the hood and hang the powersun uv bulb.?

Yes get the powersun unobstructed - that's your best bet for uvb
Okay. So I was looking at his legs and noticed little...dots on the underside of his hind legs. Are those the femoral pores and do I need to do anything with them.? They looked like little blackish dots along the inside of his leg.

Yes those would be his femoral pores- no do not do anything w/ them- males will get waxy buildup on them as he is older --- for now dont do anything w/ them

The best way to deal eith the pores is give him a semi-course rock and he will groom them himself. Sandstone works well. It also dulls the claws a bit so win win.

Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.
