We broke down and got another beardie. The girls were so sad and we felt so bad. Looking at pictures of the first one in comparison to this one, the first one definitely looked sick and I'm mad at myself I wasn't able to tell. He was so chill and looked so cute when he'd run with his tail at attention.

But, this one is acting much more like a lizard. It took a few days of hand feeding for him to stop hissing and even trying to bite and he now associates us with pets and food and comes running and lets us pick him up no problem amd will sit in our hands all day. I have been finding conflicting information from everywhere and want to make sure I do it right. I have small crickets, dubai roaches and kale. (He won't eat veggies and fruits yet) and he acts like he's starving all the time. I set the cricket hotel into his tank so I could get to them easier and he dove for the box, bleping it like crazy. He'll eat as many as I'll feed him. He does go to the bathroom normal so I don't think he's sick or anything.

I guess my question is, how many crickets/roaches does he need a day.? He's about two months and probably 7 or 8 inches long.

Here he is with a kale hat looking at me like I'm the ridiculous one.

He needs to be fed 2-3 times per day --- 15- 20 crickets at a time I am thinking --- please dust them ONCE per day/ feeding w/ calcium D 3 5 x per week and vitamins w/ beta carotene ONCE per feeding / day -- feed salads every morning -- I would get some BSFL for him medium size do not dust them feed on top of his salads as lures -- you will need a bowl that they cant get out of -- www.symtonbsf.com - for the worms - here is a website for a bowl https://www.amazon.com/MACGOAL-Rept...uGQB&pd_rd_wg=tLkwE&ref_=pd_gw_ci_mcx_mr_hp_d
website for nutrtion ignore the kale info its a good staple feeder
Nutrition Content
Make sure you have your surface basking temps of 105-110 taken w/ a digital probe thermometer and a good long tube fixture for a UVB NO coils please --- if you need help please ask --

His basking area (his rock, specifically) gets up to 103, the atmospheric in that part is about 95 to 100. What is BSFL.? I wasn't sure how many to feed him, I feed him close to 20 throughout the whole day, I believe. This morning I gave him like 7 or 8 crickets (I'm out, have to get some more) and like 5 roaches and he still seems hungry. He likes his kale, especially if I dip it in his water then give it to him. He doesn't have a coil light. We have to get the tube so right now, he has two 80 watt powersun uv bulbs during the day and a CHE at night. While it doesn't get below 75 in the house, the air is super cold at times and with our overhead fan on, it makes the room feel pretty chilly.

A petstore told me crickets aren't a good staple for everyday protein, because of their exoskeleton and they're high in fat. If that's the case, what's a good everyday bug to feed.? The roaches, I guess.?

The pet store told you wrong -- its the meal worms that have the exoskeleton that is harsh on babies stomachs -- roaches are a better staple insect www.dubiaroaches.com -- BSFL are black soldier fly larvae they are great staple feeder for babies but are small --- feed him salads first w/ the BSFL or also called nutrigrubs on the dubia roach site --- feed as many as you want of those -
You only need one MVB and it needs to be keeping temps 105-110 w/ a digital probe thermometer -- please get a long tube fixture like a Zoo Med 24" fixture for a 40+ gallon tank or a Arcadia Pro T 5 w/ a 12% bulb --- the MVB is good for heat but not so much UVB so when you get the long tube UVB post back on here and I will help you get it set up for your tank --- www.pangeareptile.com or www.petmountain.com or www.chewy.com ---

Okay, so if I'm feeding crickets and roaches, how many a day.? Is it still 15 crickets and 5 roaches a day, twice a day or something.? He acts like he's hungry all the time so I just want to make sure he's eating properly and just being greedy and not actually hungry all the time.

I feed babies as many as they will eat in 15 minutes or so 3 times a day, thats when they are growing the fastest and need the protein the most. At around 3 months i would cut back to twice per day. (I was having this conversation in another thread, i had my beardies to full size in like 8 to 9 months I've since learned it really isn't healthy to do that). Also like Karrieree said basking for babies needs to be hotter at 105 to 110. If you create a gradient for like 103 or so upto 110 they will pick the temp they need. I would also recommend (carefully so he don't escape and run off) taking him out in the real sun for a few minutes daily until you get the new uvb light in place.

Okay, that was another thing I had read, but he seems so hungry all the time, I was afraid of over feeding him, i was told they cant throw up/regurgitate and because of that they more often aspirate due to overfeeding. The gradient goes from about 75-80 on cool side, about 85-90 in the middle and 95 up to 103 on the basking side and his bulbs are probably 12 inches from him on his rock. Maybe a few more, if that. Probably closer to 12 inches from where he sits on his rock.

Thanks a lot. He's way more active and alert than our first one. He's got a personality for sure. At night, and when he cools off, he hops on top of the cricket hotel in his tank and will sprawl out on it and sleep.😅

I also wanted to ask, is it normal for them to hold their breaths during the day and night.? I'll check on him at night, (serious paranoia 😅) and he isn't breathing. I'll tap the glass or make enough noise to wake him and he takes a super deep breath. He does the same during the day, but is awake. I'll look at him, and he's super still and will hols his breath, then take a real deep breath and then breathe a little heavily, not necessarily fast. Just kind of hard, or hard for what I'm assuming is supposed to be shallow.

Maybe put a book or something under his rock to raise it just a bit, that should bring the temp up a few degrees.
Just wait, their personality get stronger as the get comfortable your in for a trear!

Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.
