Rescuing Simon

Hi there!

Today my friend sent me some photos of the enclosure that a beardie named Simon has been living in. Her friend couldn’t house him anymore and gave him to his parents who don’t know and don’t care to give him proper living environment and care. I’m considering rescuing Simon until I can get him a new home but I have some questions.

I’m worried about potential viruses/parasites that could be transmitted to my beardie, Clyde. I know AV is highly contagious. What is a good protocol for quarantining Simon. Do they need to be in separate rooms? Can I use the same tongs if I sanatize them in between or should I get separate ones? Etc.

Attached is a photo of Simon’s current living situation and a low quality photo of him too. He currently has no UVB and his basking light was out. No basking rock/place either.

Please rescue this dragon as soon as you can -- he wont survive in this environment-------- I would sanitize anything your going to use for the both of them - they should not see one another it will stress them out both - you can keep them in separate rooms if you want but I would get some F 10 its really good disinfectant and spray the utensils down in between use for each - get a fecal in to the vet for Simon for testing for parasites -- NO enemas -- take one in and drop it off --- the poor dragon needs help now -- w/ out proper basking temps and good UVB NO coils please he is getting sick -- the fecal will rule out some of the questions you have about transmitting things you dont want transmitted -- just make sure your washing your hands good in between the two of them -- you can talk to your vet about the ADV test when the fecal is done --

Omg please go get this poor guy. He is going to and probably already is suffering horribly. Even if you have to surrender him to a local pet store, anything is going to be better for him.
I would keep them in separate rooms if possible. I wouldn't use the same tongs or anything else until i got a clean bill of health from a vet. It isn't worth the risk. Besides I'm guessing once he has good lights he will probably eat everything you drop in so you may not need tongs at all. Also wash your hands with a good antibacterial soap after every trip to check on him. You are a hero for saving him but don't jeopardize your guy to do so.

Good news! I’m getting Simon on Thursday. I’ll update once I have him. I’m going to keep him in a separate room. In the meantime i’m going to buy a good UVB, separate tongs, his own carrier, and a hide. I already ordered more roaches. And I have some disinfectant already, cage will be getting a DEEP clean! I’m happy that Simon will be living his best life soon, poor baby.

Make sure you get the Reptisun 10.0 T 5 bulb -- the one that comes w/ the fixture is a 5.0 bulb- depending on the screen will determine placement and distance - please post back on here and I will help you get it set up for your tank -- I am sure he will be a lot happier once hes in better conditions

Okay, I was going to get extra bulbs anyways to give to his new owners eventually. I’m going to go to a reptile store today because all of the options on Amazon weren’t going to ship in time.

I would also LOVE any vet recommendations in the Southern California area. I live in Orange County but if anyone knows a good vet in LA or North County San Diego I would make the drive!

I have a vet now but I don’t like them! I’m going to use this as an opportunity to find a better one.

Beardies are tough, Simon looks to be in good physical condition so he has genetics on his side. One big tip for when you have a new reptile coming to your house is to always take care of YOUR dragon first [ feed, clean, handling them or their cage decor ] Never use the same container to soak Simon in if he needs a soak . Those precautions make cross contamination less likely.

Thank you @AHBD that makes a lot of sense. And yes @KarrieRee I’ve been using that website. I’m trying a new vet for Simons appointment (this Monday!) and we will see how it goes. Just picked up his new UVB and hide today. Think I will use paper towel for substrate to keep things easy and clean. Thanks everyone for the support! I’ll update soon!

What uvb did you get? You want it placed and distanced correct for best uvb effects- that's going to depend on your screen

I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.
