Diablo (Rankins)
Hi all, I’ve read a few threads and everyone seems really helpful.
We are totally new to the reptile scene and recently got ourselves a rankins. He/she is now 7-8 weeks old. Diablo is pooing daily and mostly eating but I’ve read so many mixed things about food. The breeder fed all the babies crickets and mealworms. We’ve continued doing the same and Diablo eats about 3-4 crickets and 3-4 mealworms twice a day. He’s nibbled a few bits of green veg but really not a lot. I want to know if this is enough? He sometimes isn’t even bothered by the crickets, yesterday he only ate 1 cricket and 4 mealworms. Should he be eating more? He wanders off after he’s had a few crickets (numbers above).

All advice welcome.

Welcome- I am not real savy on the Rankins breed but I know someone who is - I can flag your post to her -

If he's new he might still be adjusting, the amount he's eating is O.K but will probably increase. If the insects are on the large side compared to your little guy that might be filling him up. Do you have pics of your little Rankin and the size of the insects next to him ? You can also post in the Rankin's sub down below.

How do I post in the rankins sun?
I know some of his bugs are definitely too big. His first box was fine but the pet shop couldn’t get the small crickets so we had to make do with what they had. I’ve preordered small crickets arriving Wednesday.

Congratulations on Diablo. After your question was answered. Can you share why you chose a Rankin versus a bearded dragon? I know there aren't many differences, and both are truly adorable. I would love to hear your story.

Diablo is so cute ! The Rankin's sub is down below, you just scroll to it but here's the link.

So yeah, just be careful of feeding him larger insects, they can become very constipated or impacted which can be very serious, like a blockage. Good to hear that you've ordered the smaller bugs, always do that. He looks good + healthy, hope all goes well for you !

It’s for my daughter, she’s 12. We didn’t even know about rankins until we started looking for a beardie. We liked the idea they were smaller.

Thanks for the link. Yeah, despite the fact he doesn’t appear to eat as much as I expected he does a poo at least once a day and it looks “normal”. There are some smaller crickets in the mix and he’s much happier when they’re provided for him.

For my knowledge….what are differences between the two?
My limited knowledge is that rankins are smaller. We’ve never owned either so can’t make a good comparison, as we’re learning about rankins as we go but I gather apart from size they are fairly similar.

Rankin's top out around 11" long, really a nice size that makes care easier by eliminating the need for a huge tank . You can find more info in the Rankin's forum or just Googling a reputable source.

yes- that is what I know, the size, and lifespan (but who can really determine lifespan right?!) The care is supposed to be similar.
Oh and the head is rounder as far as physical features vs the triangle.
They are absolutely adorable. I think at first glance, anyone can easily mistake a Rankin for a bearded dragon.

What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

i feel so sad reading your about me 😢
Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
