Clyde’s diarrhea is back :/

Just when I though all was well again, Clyde is now having diarrhea!

History:
May 12th Clyde had ovaries removed to solve preovulatory stasis issue. Around that time he was also on deworming medication for hookworm (bad timing). The medication gave him some runny poops but after he was through with it his poops looked healthier than ever! Vet said he could have had the hookworm since he was a baby and it just progressed, his poops had always been a little runny but I got him tested for the hookworm when his urinate started turning pink. As far as the surgery goes, everything went well, recovery way good, and stitches are out!

^Healthy poop 8 days ago.
(lol ignore the greens floating in water i was trying a trick to see if he would drink on his own hahaha)

Then we moved from CO to California. He’s had some relocation stress (he’s mostly scared of the big glass door in my room when he roams so I have to close the curtain lol) and constipation. Last time he had relocation he also had constipation so it wasn’t a big surprise. When he would finally poop it would be these massive but very healthy looking poops (solid poop, just a little excess water, white urinate). Then the consolation went away (yay!) but quickly his poops have gotten too watery.

^^^Today he had explosive diarrhea that got on 3 walls of his cage and even a little drip of poop water was on his back, it was quite the crime scene. I’m worried that my little baby isn’t feeling very well. The urinate is still white and I JUST got another poop sample done at the vet (he actually pooped on the examination table lol) but it came back negative for parasites/worms.

His UVB is a T5 and I heard those are good for a year but I switch it out every 9 months to be safe. It’s been 8 months so I might switch it out early. Could it be that his UVB is too weak/strong? It’s a 34inch 39W T5 HO 10.0 UVB mounted on the inside of his 120 gal tank in a reflective hood. Could that be too strong???

I have noticed him going under his net (basking spot is on top of net) and the temp ON the net is between 95°-100°. Could he be hiding from the UVB? He also has been going into his hide during the day sometimes, very random, not every day. It’s usually after he roams especially if he sees the big scary window so I thought it was maybe relocation stress. He’s had stress mark a little more often too, which is not very much but in the past he would hardly ever get them. I’ll attach a photo of the tank set up. Tank is super empty right now because he pooped on everything.

Note: this is how it was set up in Colorado too. When I first got to CA I had it laying on top of the mesh for a week maybe more before remounting it.

The other idea I had was maybe he’s eating too much zucchini, although he eats it a lot and it usually doesn’t give him diarrhea. I chop it up to “garnish” his salads almost every day so that he’ll eat the salad.

Diet is kale, collard greens, mustard greens, and dandelion greens as staples, zucchini and greens beans as toppings, bee pollen as a topping (I use it every day though), dubia roaches (every day because he still is gaining back a little weight from surgery after that I will cut back, hornworms and occasional fruit as treats.

Any other ideas why he could be having diarrhea? Where can I get a UVB output measuring device? I think that could be helpful for my peace of mind.

I recently added a water dish to his tank but he has never drank from it. I always had it out in Colorado but in California I’ve been trying to keep humidity down as I’m right next to the ocean. I usually just use a dropper to give him water every day or every other day. Is it possible to give them too much water?

One last thing. He just itched his head but he shed his head like a week ago. Could he be shedding again already? He’s barely shed since adulthood, twice maybe. And he has some shed on his tail that I just lightly scrubbed in the bath because it’s having trouble coming off on its own. Not sure if that’s helpful info, maybe it could tell me something about UVB levels…

THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP!!!

The UVB used to be scooted over to the right (away from basking area, just a couple inches) before so I’ve done that again in the meantime.

I’m also reading about skin darkening/thickening with overexposure to UVB. I did notice that his colors weren’t as bright after this last shed. I’ll post some comparison photos here.

^^^ now (just shed!) he is darkening himself a little in this photo, but his colors have been more muted in general i guess?

Yes the UVB does bring out the brightest of colors -- I guess if it was me I would move that log you have by the hammock and place it directly under the UVB - what is the distance from the top of that log to the bulb? You want it 12-15 inches --

I was suggesting the dampened colors were from skin darkening from too much UVB, not from too little UVB.

The skin on the top of his head seems thickish too maybe…? It’s hard to tell.

Is too much UVB a potential cause of diarrhea? Of is that only from too little?

He basks on the net, just uses the log to get up there. I’ll measure now.

If the UVB is too strong he will not bask for long and / or hide from it- too little UVB he would be trying to get up to the bulb as close as he could get - as far as the skin darkening for too much I dont know - cant answer that question - dragons know what light they need -- the poop is effected by the UVB - the UVB is what helps the dragon absorb / synthesize the calcium hes getting - I do not think it causes diarrhea-- or at least I havent heard of that -- I am thinking its the diet -- too much veggies w/ water content like squash green peppers cucumbers and regular iceberg lettuce --

Should I try to lay off the water dropper for now? Could the diarrhea be from dehydration by any chance?

And okay, he has been hiding under net lately so I might put the lamp back on top of the mesh for now, but I’ll also give him something he can climb up to get closer to it if he wants. Would that be a good idea?

And where can I find a UVB measurer? Is a 10.0 UVB usually too strong for mounting inside the cage? Should I try a 5.0 UVB?

Please leave the UVB where it is -- what is the distance for the log to the bulb? Please do not change out the bulb - you need the 10.0 for a Zen tank --the distance from the net to the bulb is what? It looks too close -- you want distance of 12-15 inches -- and no UVB's need to be mounted in tanks w/ a 24" height --- here is a pic of my Zen

The ruler is about 12.5 inches long. The tip of the log is about 12 inches away from UVB, he doesn’t bask on the log. The UVB is 9 inches from the closest edge of the net, but he doesn’t bask there or go there really. The middle of the net where he basks is 12 inches.

It was more like 10-11 inches from the basking spot earlier today before I scooted the UVB back over towards the right.

Boy I am not sure on brand - let's ask Cooper dragon
@CooperDragon
I just got burned on a solar meter I ordered off of eBay the place I ordered from has a scam going w/ the shipping entity the same- I was burned out of $273 - they had fake delivery receipts saying it was handed to resident - I wasn't even home- it was a big mess - I went thru PayPal and they were of no help as they were going by the fake shipping details- it was obvious that it was fake as they had it ordered one day and delivered the very next day

Okay I think I’m going to lower the height of the net and also change the bulb out for now.

Still I’m not sure what caused the diarrhea.

He’s exploring right now, so he’s feeling good :)
image.jpg

I’m going to give him some water since diarrhea can be dehydrating. Plus he keeps licking the air like he’s thirsty.

What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
