Yellow fungus treatment options

Hello all, it’s been a while. We are working with a vet right now but I’m wanting to get a second opinion and see what other people think.

I’ve heard a lot of pessimism regarding the outcome of a beardie with yellow fungus. A big consensus is that it’s a death sentence.

Gary is currently on Voriconazole and it is making him feel worse. He was acting completely normal before starting it despite the fungus. Even with this, a lot of people say it doesn’t cure it. Doing some research, we found an article of a vet claiming to have fully cured a beardie using terbinafine. I wanted to see if anyone has any insight on this or experience with it.

People are making us feel like it’s time to give up but we aren’t ready to do that to him right now. We are will to travel very far to get him the help he needs if anyone has some advice on research centers that might be able to help him with more testing.

I’ve attached a recent photo of the infection and also a photo of how healthy he appears.

Thank you all.

Sorry to hear about Gary, Y.F. is tough to deal with. How long has this been developing ? It's definitely not time to give up, there's always a chance that you can either save or sat least prolong his life. It's up to you on continuing the meds. but I'd definitely try the fungal creams like Lamisil that contain terbinafine. You might try unpasteurized honey as well, from a beekeeper or reputable source and alternate using the Lamisil and the honey. If you need to bathe him once a week or if he gets dirty, put Betadine in the water to kill the germs but other than that give him oral hydration via syringe, slurries or veggies that have a high water content.

He started out with a bump there that we got checked out, and it turned out it was just full of blood. Eventually it started going away, but then late April it started turning yellow.

We got him right into the vet and they scraped some scales to be tested. They tried to grow the fungus and nothing came of it. We also had full diagnostics run and all his organs are working fully as normal, and his white blood cell count was not elevated.

Then a couple weeks ago, his scales starting coming off completely. Throughout all of this, he has been eating, drinking, and being normally active like he usually is. The vet isn’t getting back to us on our concerns, she is acting like all this is no big deal.

So the vet did not confirm Y.F ? It does look fungal . My suggestions are just that, nothing is positively guaranteed to work but antifungal cream and raw honey both work against fungal infections and raw honey is good for any type of wound and there's not much else that can be tried in the case of a fungal infection.

No, she did not. She is just saying that’s what she thinks it is. The culture didn’t come back with any fungal growth.

We are wanting to get him tested again to determine exactly what type of fungus it is and which medication is best to tackle that specific one.

Thank you for the honey info!

Hello,

I agree, honey is the best thing you can use for infection, topically. I would definitely hesitate
using an oral anti-fungal until you can get more clarity on the situation.
I hope he is doing better soon!

Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.
