Hi guys!
I just lost my beardie due to an illness his past owner either failed to disclose with me or didn’t know about. I’ve now ended up with a Rankins dragon and want to ensure I’m doing everything properly and that he’s happy and comfortable as well as be able to notice any signs of sickness or distress.
I can’t seem to find too much research pertaining specifically to Rankins so thought I’d open up a discussion for any and all questions and knowledge to be posted about these cute little guys.
I have a male, 13 month old, named Lennox, that I got yesterday. He’s in an about 36”x 18”x 18” glass tank with a metal cage screen lid. A T8 Terrarium hood with a 10.0 UVB strip bulb, a 150 W basking lamp, a 100W Ceramic heat emitter, and a 75W basking lamp. Basking side is about 105°F and 20% humidity, with the cooler side around 85°F with 28% humidity.
He’s decently active and great about eating his greens, but has been trying to escape the top of his enclosure as well as glass surfing. Difficult to handle than when I held him at the pet store and very skittish. I’ve been giving him minimal attention with most of it revolving around feeding so he has time to settle in before I try handling or bathing. I know it’s only been a day, but wanted to know some differing behaviour or care for Rankins in comparison to Beardies.
With beardies, they can get the black beard, or close their eyes, or the ovals on their belly, etc. What about Rankins? They have more of a pattern to them in general, and they don’t really have a beard and even under stress my little guy hasn’t closed his eyes like my last beardie.
Are there any behavioural things they do as well as or instead of things that beardies do?
What I know in comparison to beardies:
Their lifespan is typically shorter than a beardies coming in at 6-10 years instead of 10-15 years.
Their average length as an adult is 12 inches rather than 24 inches.
They tend to be more social and can be cohabbed with other dragons in colonies up to 3 even into adulthood. (3 females or 1 male and 2 females)
