well thanks for triggering the issues! helping trouble shoot is way more fun than my accounting homework i'm supposed to be doing!

i tried both typing the date in and using the calendar. that's a LOT of clicking and i never would have though about the 10 year jumps. got it to save though so that's good. either way i think it would be good if it told you what the expected format was. i can see new members getting to the point i was at and giving up on it

So, to try and summarize what I think I captured as good candidates for the Profile Fields (keeping in mind these would be more "long term" details than specific issues):
  • Beardie name(s)
  • Beardie birthdate (est.)
  • Beardie gender
  • Beardie size (STL, since most think of it this way)
  • Appx. date you got beardie
  • Enclosure Dimensions
  • Diet
    • Primary feeder(s)
    • Greens used
  • Temperatures (Cool side, warm side, basking spot)
  • UVB light
    • brand & model
    • coil or tube
    • on top of screen or inside enclosure
    • distance between bulb and basking spot
  • Basking bulb
    • brand & model or type
    • watts, daytime, colored or clear, etc.
  • Basking temp thermometer
    • stick on, probe, IR gun, other
  • Type of substrate (people might be afraid of that one, given how hot a topic it is :) )
  • Pictures of setup

Not on the profile field list:
  • Poop/urate details (specific to an issue and can change too frequently to be a profile field; might just need to be a question asked if relevant to post/question)

I do think some people might get confused if they have multiple dragons. But I think MOST people coming in with questions/problems have one beardie. By time they have multiple, they've got most of the basic figured out.

I think it will take about 14-15 fields to capture all those. Hopefully that wouldn't be too much for people.

would you want to include the colored bulb option considering they are not recommended? i'm not sure how the program works, but that might be a good spot to add a little note off to the side that they should not be used.

and should humidity levels be in there too?

all in all, things are looking good!

As part of the description of the bulb, yes. If we don't prompt for it, it may not come up, and thus not realize the issue.

Okay. I've created all the fields!

I also added a notification that you all can currently see (not yet enabled for new members). And I've modified the Welcome PM that new members get after registering to be the following:

Welcome, USERNAME!

Thank you for registering an account on BeardedDragon.org.

Please take a moment to fill out the enclosure setup fields in your user profile Account Details (from Beardie's Name to Enclosure Setup PIctures).

This information is key to most questions people have about taking care of their bearded dragon. Filling out these fields now will help reduce being asked the same questions when you post your question.

If you have a question to ask to the community, please post it to an appropriate forum. You can do this by click on the Forums tab (or navigation menu), clicking on the forum that seems to best match your question, and then click "Post thread" (green button).

The following link can help you get your first post up quickly. Select the forum you want to post to, and you will be given an editor to type your message and/or question to the forum community.

We hope that your visit to the site is helpful, informative, and friendly!

Welcome to BeardedDragon.org!

I'm only pestering users about half a dozen of the fields sprinkled throughout the list. The hope is that they will fill out everything they can, and that most of the real core details will be captured.

Okay... and now I've switched over the "Notices", that you may have seen while testing, to only display for new users (up to 14 days from registration) who have not filled in 7 selected fields.

Also... Beardie name(s) is the only one that will display on the left. It isn't "required", but I'm hoping it will serve as an indicator if anyone has bothered to fill our the fields at all. Maybe a different field to include next to posts would be better. I also haven't looked to see how this displays on mobile (important, given phone access accounts for some 70-80% of the page views on the site.

good thinking. i'm one of those weird people that use their phone as a phone, so everything i do on here is done on a pc.

Ok. On mobile, those details just don't display (not enough room). That's okay. It doesn't take too much to quickly tap to the user's profile and view the "About" tab.

Is there a way to maybe make the name show up as a tag or something, like the "Moderator" or "Staff Member" tags? Maybe instead of "Original Poster" if it has been filled out? Just a thought. If not, you're right it's just a couple clicks.

i had similar idea of maybe there could be something in that section that lets us know that profile has been filled out. but then assumed that would probably also fall in the category of there not being enough room

No. Something like that was my first thought. I was hoping to just have something like that to indicate info had been filled out and to make it clickable directly to the about tab. Custom Fields seem to have their way of doing things in the system. I mean, it’s possible, in that a custom addon could be developed to make such a thing possible, but it would take a lot of effort (including learning how to develop addons for Xenforo). If I had the free time I once did and no family or wife with a list of other projects around the home she keeps talking to me about, I’d see that as a fun thing to learn and figure out. :)

Okay... to help make this a little easier... I installed an add-on that allowed me to make the "About" tab the default when viewing a user profile. That way, this information is front and center with one less click. I don't think there's much lost for anyone to not have the "Profile Posts" be the default. It may reduce the use of Profile Posts, but few people use that currently anyway.

I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

i feel so sad reading your about me 😢
Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
