Burn?

Could this be a burn? My bearded dragon had a dark patch on his head for a while and now some scales fell off and it’s just skin. I added a hat to his enclosure about week ago for him to hide in if he wanted but sometimes he climbs on top, does it look like he’s to close to his basking light? (I took the hat out now.)

The light hes sitting under is the basking bulb? What is the basking temps? How are you getting them?

That is the basking bulb. Surface temp stays at 105-110 (using a temp gun) and air temp is usually 85-90 (using digital thermometer).

Hey there, that does look it is possibly a burn. You can use raw unpasteurized honey, it heals things very well and promotes tissue granulation. Get rid of the bulb, some high watt MVB at close range can burn and they can also melt the socket and fall out. Get some of these from Walmart or Home Depot.

Okay, I do have some halogen bulbs right now but they are flood lights, would those work? Also I have it on a dimmer, I don’t know if that helps or not.

Here is some info on the bulbs in question
Flood refers to the width of the beam cast by the light due to the reflector. A flood light is wider than a spot light, and preferred in most cases. Halogen is the type of bulb and they work well, as do incandescent. The heat output of each of them has a lot to do with the wattage, but this varies between brands. I generally recommend using either a halogen or incandescent flood light. These are typically BR30 or larger (BR30 and BR40 are typical sizes and are big bulbs with a bulge reflector) The PAR38 is similar in size and beam width but uses a parabolic reflector so they tend to have a flat front with the reflector in the cone portion. The number is the important part there. Go with 30+ for a wide enough beam. Those are often referred to as flood lights while the smaller numbers are often referred to as spot (basking spot lamp for example).

Ah I see, my spotlight beam is way too small now that I’ve tried it out. I’ll find a flood light, thank you!

That does look somewhat like a burn, but strange since your bulb is not real close. As Karrie suggested, a flood bulb is really good &
gives a wider beam for heating & overall brightness.
The raw unpasteurized honey will definitely help out for the wound but try to keep it as clean as possible so it doesn't get infected. Be
sure he can't get closer than 8-10 inches from the basking bulb too.

Let us know how his wound is healing up.

Okay I’m getting a flood light today. Do you think it might be scale rot? I’ve tried to look up pictures but mostly it just shows me people asking about scale rot. He has another dark patch on his arm now. If I took him to a vet would they be able to tell or should I wait and see if it spreads?

I can’t remember exactly but I think my bulb was 100 or 125 watts. I have it on a dimmer. Here’s a picture of his arm:

Oh okay, that makes me feel better. Yep I’ve been applying raw honey diluted with a little water 2 or 3 times a day and letting it dry on there, hopefully that’s the right way to do it? It’s looking about the same but a little less red, hopefully it heals up nicely. Also should I be doing anything specific to keep it clean?
