It's been almost 2 years!!!

This forum is specifically for people who want to share day-to-day stories about their beardies... the weird or fun stuff. This is not a forum for seeking help, but more just for sharing the cuteness that is your beardie.

I haven't been on much lately, but I figured I would drop a quick update on Spike.
On March 26th 2017, I brought this tiny little scaly thing home that my oldest son picked out. She glass surfed the tank at the pet store and ran back and forth in order to get my son's attention. She wasn't brightly colored or the biggest (she was actually the smallest out of the bunch of babies), but her spunky-ness caught a (at the time) 7 year old boys attention. There wasn't a choice, he knew he wanted that feisty one.

This is the day we brought her tiny butt home:

And this is the other day:

She is definitely spoiled, but oh so very much loved. She absolutely loves her cuddle time. My youngest is still a bit scared to hold her as she wiggles on him (he is 4) but loves the rub her chin for her. Spike enjoys lounging on my oldest's chest, covered with her blankie, when it is close to lights out and he is relaxing with his tablet before bed time.

It doesn't seem like it has been a year, that is for sure. And to look at some of her pics when we first got her... I just can't picture Spike ever being that small, even though she was. She still has her smile, though, that has never left her. It might just be the way her mouth is, but the kids get a kick out of it and call her Spike the "Smiley" Dragon. :)

As far as her care goes, I owe that to everyone on here. If it wasn't for this forum and the members, I don't know if Spike would be as healthy as she is now. Cause, it's no secret, I was one of those people who believed the pet store and bought one of those reptile starter kits with all the wrong lights and everything.
It wasn't until I got on here that I learned everything was completely wrong. Haha.

It is quite fun to see how much she has grown. She went from being a tiny little thing, to a decent size dragon! <3

Time flies when you're having fun -- nice to hear that she's doing so well.

I've never raised a little one -- ours had most of his growth already when we got him. But I understand that they can grow really fast when you're not looking. I think that goes for both beardies and human children, actually...

Oh my goodness. You have no idea. It is like you blink and BOOM! Bearded dragon and kiddos alike. Haha.

In all honesty, I loved watching her grow, but she was a very fragile baby. More times than not, she scared the poo out of me not only with being so small, but her lack of an appetite, too, when she was small.
I don't have to worry about that now, but I am not sure I would ever want to go through it again. I am finally getting some salad into her, but she definitely still prefers her bugs. I won't complain too much, since I know those are gut loaded with veggies for her, so. I'll take whatever progress she will give me. :D

That's good that she's learning to like greens.

Oddly enough, our beardie started pigging out on his salads several times a day again starting about a month ago. He hasn't been willing to eat anything but bugs, and the odd leaf that we'd slip in his mouth while he was chewing on a bug, for about the last 3 years. Go figure. I'm hoping it's not too good to be true and doesn't turn out to be a symptom of something going wrong. He seems fine otherwise, so we'll find out later this month. He has an appointment with the vet for his yearly (or more often if needed) checkup.

Like yours, our beardie still chases after bugs with much enthusiasm, and I have to suppose that he'd probably always go for the bugs instead of the salad, given a choice.

Spike spent a good bit of time out of her cage yesterday, but she was still a lazy lounge lizard. :D She spent a good bit of time using me as a giant pillow, watching NCIS with me on Netflix. Once she turned to face me, like in the pic, it was one of those, "k, hooman, i'm done." She was looking over my shoulder at her tank. Haha.

On the plus side, she has taken a liking to Mustard Greens, so there is that. Although, I learned that she is only willing to eat them for the first feeding in the morning and they have to be drizzled with a little bit of water. :D She is still all about her bugs, but I can't complain. Since she has started on her salads like a good girl, she has cut herself way back on dubias. I never thought the day would come, but she is slowly doing it to herself without any help from me.

OMG, she's humongous! :D And beautiful. :love10:

Most of them are pretty good at letting you know when they're done cuddling and want to go somewhere else.

Glad to hear she's gotten around to sampling some greens.

Our beardie suddenly took a liking to greens again early last month. He's been attacking his salad several times a day like he used to over 3 years ago. Hopefully it's a good sign. He's got an appointment with the vet for his annual checkup a week from next Saturday, so we'll see. He still goes after crickets and roaches with much enthusiasm too. :blob5:

Welp, I definitely didn't realize just how long it has been since I have posted on here about Spike, until I decided to log on just now.
It has been forever! O.O

Any who, I suppose I can give an update, seeing as how I haven't in a good while.
March 26th, just a few days away, will make 2 years of me bringing Spike home. :) This little girl has been by far one of the most rewarding pets. She was so tiny and frail when I brought her home that in all honesty, I wondered if I had made the right choice to bring home a baby beardie. I second guessed myself constantly.
Well, even though I worried like crazy, my little girl is now 2 years old and still as loving, cuddly, and spunky as ever. She still enjoys sleeping in hoodie pockets and being wrapped up in soft blankets, lounging on the couch with the kids while they play their tablets or watch tv, sitting and looking out the windows in the house, especially to watch the traffic go by, and she absolutely loves to watch the dogs run through the house chasing their toys. I have a VERY NOSY bearded dragon. Lol There isn't anything in this house that happens without her seeing and knowing about it.

Also, she happened to surprise me the other day. My baby laid 16 eggs! They weren't fertile or anything, but it was still shocking. She didn't act any different, didn't try to dig in her tank, kept her appetite, was still active as can be.... and I was getting ready to leave for work the other night at 9pm, ready to turn her lights off, when BAM! There were eggs!

Image

The look she gave me was priceless. Honestly, I don't even know if shocked covered my reaction. Haha. I knew Spike was female, but I was not expecting her to give me eggs. :) I mean, I knew it would happen eventually, but yeah. Lol.

Spike is a very spoiled little girl. If not by me, then by my kids. My oldest mostly as my youngest is only 5, but he does still sit with me or his Bubby when we have Spike out and pets her. She is an attention fiend. :D The more attention she gets, the happier she is.

I took this about 20 or so minutes after she had spent quite a few hours out of her tank, with the kids, lounging on the arm of the couch, watching cartoons with them. I think the cartoon watching wore her out.
