Worried about Ted!

Postby Swagphie » Tue Feb 23, 2021 7:31 am

Hey all,

Sorry for the long post.
I have an eight year old female who has numerous health issues at the moment, including a virus and due to undergo surgery for infected eggs. They have ruled out noravirus thankfully.

Noticed today the tip of her tail smells disgusting...
It is honestly like something rotting or open flesh.
She definitely doesn't have tail rot, she is happy for us to touch it and isn't in any discomfort.

After getting her out the bath it seems like her skin has split?
Could this just be a normal shed?

Unsure due to how light the scales are underneath/the scales which have shed are a normal colour and how bad it smells.

We have an appointment at the vet Thursday to get it checked before her surgery next week.

Any advice or thoughts would be great!
Sophie

Hi there, I've never heard of a tail having such bad odor but it would make sense possibly if the tissue is dead there. Is this much different color coming through than usual ? BTW, did you mean to say she doesn't have atadenovirus ? I don't think they get Norovirus. Also, how was it decided that she has infected eggs and needs surgery ? Is your vet experienced with beardies ?

The scales on her tail almost look fake (not normal). The dark outlines make it look like old stuck shed to me! Has she had problems shedding her tail at all? This might explain the smell.

Yeah so sorry, she doesn't have Atadenovirus.
We did see a guy who wasn't experienced and thought she was impacted but caused further problems with an enema.
We've seen an amazing lady since with lots of experience.
She is a lot lighter under those scales than normal.
The vet did an ultrasound, she has never lay eggs in her whole life. She says there is no clear outline between them and they're all clumped together.

This is her tail today, a little lightening from half way down?
She has had problems shedding it previously.

Thank you so much for both your replies

She looks well, alert, etc . There may be a problem with the tail but it's really odd that it smells like rotting flesh. Has she shed more skin there ? And I know your appt. is today, what will they be doing, is it the surgery ? I wanted to mention that developing eggs are always clumped together so that in itself is no indication of egg trouble. How long ago was the ultra sound done ? Is she acting normally + eating well ?

So the tail is essentially dead, she definitely has an issue with her eggs which has made her prone to blood clots. The vet is a exotic animal specialist and has advised the smell is due to it being 'wet gangrene' essentially.

They did an xray today and there is no damage to the bone, to rule out any external element causing the issue.
We have pain relief and antibiotics to hopefully stop it spreading further up her tail and a blood test for sepsis and to check her kidneys.

She has peaks and lows. We've been syringe feeding her for nearly a month and she started on live food again last week and she has stopped again since this issue with her tail.
She also has some kidney and liver issues which had improved but she's urinating large amounts of clear fluid daily again.
This has stopped today, so hopefully we will get another peak, the meds will help and she can have her surgery next week.

That's what I thought about the tail, it may end up needing surgery as well. Hopefully the infection stops. How long ago were the eggs seen on ultrasound ?

They were seen about three weeks ago, she's never lay anything in the eight years we've had her.
We were informed she was male until she got very poorly in January, in hindsight we should have got her sexed professionally or seen by a vet but we never had a reason.

She is burrowing and is obviously very uncomfortable at the minute too.

You say she's burrowing , does she have a laybox ? She might be ready to lay some eggs which would be great news.
