Hi everyone,

This is my first post here, I am new. I am looking for help/advice with my 15 year old beardie Spike. Overnight he got a red spot on his tongue. He has never had any spots on his tongue before. Yesterday he ate a bunch of superworms and I thought maybe one of them bit his tongue as he was eating it or perhaps he bit his own tongue. He also has brown around his teeth which he has had for 3 years now, the vet saw this and said it was normal due to his age. Is this urgent, should I wait and see if it starts to go away? Thanks so much for your help. :D

Wow, you have a really good looking old beardie ! You don't see too many live that long, 15 years. That's pretty awesome ! Do you mind telling a liittle about how you've raised + cared for him all these years ? What was his main feeder insect, did he eat veggies, what type of lighting you have ? Sorry for all the Q's. :)

As for the tongue , it doesn't look like a bite but that does seem logical. If you have a good vet you might have it looked at. Other than that it might just go away or just be a benign spot.

Thanks AHBD, I've always made him one of my top priorities since day 1. I started him off with crickets which he ate up until 5 years old, then decided he no longer wanted to chase after them or eat them. I fed him all kinds of veggies except for the forbidden ones such as iceburg lettuce, avocados, spinach etc. He is quite picky and ate mostly romaine, cilantro and kale. Whatever I fed him I always put vitamins and calcium on, which is in the pic. After 5 years old he would only eat superworms or hornworms as his protein. He LOVES blueberries and eats them weekly. I included a pic of his lights, there's a second UV long tube bulb not in the pic, it's a ReptiSun 10.0 15 watt which covers the entire cool side of the tank, it's a 4 foot long tank. UV replaced every 6 months. I've changed his substrate over the years and in the end I chose to stick with millet seed. A reptile breeder/specialist told me about it, that it's safe. If they eat the seed they just poop it out like we do with corn. I had slate tile for a while but it was so hard to keep clean. As for water I use bottled distilled water from a syringe and drop it in his mouth directly because he liked to use his water dish as a toilet lol. I bathe him once a week and do a thorough inspection of him. Also I do a daily visual check of his appearance and interact with him. Anytime something wasn't right I brought him to the vet which was 2x only. This is his 3rd health issue ever and I am concerned beardie mom. I will monitor the spot for a week and if no improvement he's going to the vet. I hope you enjoyed my essay on 15 year old beardie care lol.

Well you've taken great care of him and he obviously has good genetics as well. Do you mind if I ask if you got him from a pet store or breeder ? Superwoms are sometimes frowned on as a staple but I also use them as part of the main diet. :)

So yes, just keep an eye on the spot and if it gets worse definitely have it looked at. Hopefully Spike will be O.K. and keep thriving . :)

I got him from a reptile store which sold all kinds of snakes and lizards but also bunnies and chinchillas.

I heard that before about supers but I guess he has incredible genetics. I picked him out of the bunch because he was the best eater. They put a mark on him because they said he would tend to be aggressive with his siblings over crickets. He was the biggest of the bunch as well. He’s always been a very friendly dragon with zero aggression though.

Thanks :) I will def keep an eye on the spot!

Here's another pic from today in his viv, looking good today minus the tongue issue.

Thats great but I must say I am shocked  w / the UVB you have been using --- have you always used the 13 watt UVB or is it new??? I haft to ask because the new Reptsiun 10.0 UVB 13 watts have been killing the dragons--- and the brand I have never heard of -- we need to learn and I am really interested in how long you have been using it

15 years is great, is there anything else you havent said about how you've kept him? I'd love to follow your advice and have Mango live that long. Best of luck to your beardie.

It has been known to cause issues w/ eyes among other things but you are also using the tube fixture as well so he has done very well --- we have had alot of people using the coil Reptisun mini compact and they have had terrible experiences w/ them -- my guess is w/ you using the tube fixture as well it has prevented issues w/ the compact -- I would haft to say the fixture that you have has done its job not so much the mini compact --- I am terrible about the compact bulb --- I dont like them just from the problems people have had w/ them --- but Spike has done very well living as long as he has --

Thanks so much for bringing that to my attention because as it turns out I believe that was a one time mistake buying that one. I just pulled up my Amazon account in a panic checking my last bulb purchase and I was relieved to see it's an Exo Terra 26 watt due to be changed in August. That is his normal UVB and what is currently in his viv. I would like to apologize for the confusion as I do not want to mislead anyone thinking your beardie can live 15 years off a 13 watt compact. As for other tips for longevity, interact with them regularly.... I swear it makes a difference, he loves being in the living room and watching people come and go. I'm not really sure what else but feel free to ask me any questions.

Edit* You are saying all coils are bad? Yikes, we are lucky then because for a fact he's had the 26 watt Exo Terra coil his whole life in addition to the 10.0 15 watt long tube.

We or I have not heard anything bad about the 26 watt and if its in a reflective dome approx 6-8 inches from basking decor I believe is distance it should be good- it's equalivent to a T 8-- if I am off on distance someone can correct me---

Hey everyone, I just wanted to give an update and let you know the red spot is gone. It disappeared almost completely the next day. As of today it’s entirely gone. I’m going with my original guess and I think it was a blood blister, looks like the worm bit his tongue or maybe he bit his own tongue.

I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

i feel so sad reading your about me 😢
Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
