Baytril side effects

Postby NuggetsMama » Wed Feb 26, 2020 12:32 pm

Nugget is on his second day of Baytril due to mouth rot. The vet injected the first dose yesterday and then advised me to squirt the following doses in his mouth or inject a worm just before feeding. Yesterday he seemed to perk up quite a bit after the vet , today he’s pretty dark and won’t even touch any of his bugs - his bug appetite was fine until today.

I did some research and it seems this can be hard on his kidneys. I am going to turn his CHE on at night to bump the temps a little bit. I’m also wondering if I should syringe feed him some diluted pedialite - if so how much is safe ?

Any other tips for a recovering beardy on antibiotics welcome! (Any idea how long until he should show signs of improvement ?)

It can be hard on kidneys especially in longer doses (over 7 days or so). It can cause loss of appetite and lethargic behavior. It's good that you are going to bump temps a bit overnight. Mid-High 70s to maybe low 80s is plenty. I would also offer plenty of water via syringe. You can drip it on his nose and let him lick it up. Offering hydrating foods helps too if he is eating. Things like squash and hornworms are usually a hit. Look out for dry, chalky urate as a sign of dehydration. This is a vary commonly prescribed antibiotic and I hope it helps quickly =)

Thanks ! He hasnt been eating any greens the past5 days. His bug appetite was fine until today , he’s definitely feeling pretty crummy . Do you have any experience with feeding electrolyte drinks ? He was already pretty dry before the baytril so I want to hydrate him as much as I can

I'm not crazy about those electrolyte drinks. Too much sugar and other unnecessary ingredients. I prefer using plain water to hydrate (both animals and people) during illness. I have experience doing that and it works well.

Hello,

I agree, keeping him hydrated while he is on those meds. Baytril definitely dehydrates them
so if you want to use electrolytes, like pedialyte you can dilute them down a bit so he doesn't
get too much sugar. Or you can just dilute some apple or grape juice & put a tiny pinch of sea
salt in it & mix it up well.
Do you have any probiotics to give to him?

Let us know how he is doing.

I’m looking at getting probiotics I’m going to stop at Pet smart and see if they have any . I can find some benebac online but it won’t be here for a week if I order it . Also I’m seeing it comes in a few different forms so I’m not sure what to get .

Can you suggest a doesage and method of administration ? The benebac instructions seem to be for dogs so not sure how to convert that

There should be some for birds, which I'd expect to be closer, but I'm sure Tracie will know.
Never knew I could get so happy about poop, or so comfortable with bugs. :-D

There is a bird version of bene-bac that comes in gel form. I usually put it on a q-tip or piece of food and let them eat it that way. They tend to like the taste so it's not usually too hard of a sell. Just be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after handling it since it does contain some bacterial strains that can be harmful to humans if ingested.

Another question ! Since starting the Baytril, Nugget has been favouring the cool side of his tank . Before getting sick he hardly spent any time over there. Is the common for sick beardies ? Should I be moving him to his warm side ?

If they aren't feeling well they will tend to bunker down so that may be the case with spending time on the cool side. It isn't harmful so I'd just let him be as long as he has easy access to go warm up if he wants to.

Hello,

How is he doing today?
I hope his system kicks it fast & that he starts feeling better. Just keep him a little warmer
overnight, to help out his system. Around 80 or so is usually good, for awhile.
There is a bird & reptile benebac powder that should have some instructions. You can use
1/8th of a teaspoon daily for awhile, for the duration of the medication rounds. Then, you can
give it for a couple of weeks after he is done with his medication.

Let us know how he is doing.

He’s still not eating, but a chunk of the sore on his lip came out in the bath. His eye looks no better ☹️.. he’s still not eating but he will lap up some water from the syringe a few times a day, especially after taking his antibiotic. He just pooped today ! Which was the first since Feb 20- poop looked good not too dry not too watery, urate was white but small.

I bumped the heat to 80-82 at night. Still trying to find some benebac locally- None at pet smart or my vet so I’m going to make some stops at the other stores / vets and see what’s around. Worst case I’ll order it online but it won’t arrive for a week or so, also gonna look for some soy yogurt- so far only able to find almond & coconut yogurt.

Can you post pics of what his mouth looks like now since the crusty bit came off ? Hopefully the honey continues to help. It can help his tummy a bit as well.

I just took these pictures, he has honey on them now so that’s the wetness there’s no pus.

Does anyone suggest the soy yogurt until I can get my hands on some benebac ? I’m calling around every local vet and store today to see if I can find it. But if I have to wait a week or so for it to be ordered in , should I offer some yogurt ? And does it have to be soy ? I can only find almond or coconut based
