are respiratory infections contagious?

Postby SkittlesK » Wed Oct 09, 2019 10:26 am

My adult bearded dragon appears to have an RI & I was wondering if my 3 month old will get it?
they are in the same room, different tanks.

I have a CHE above the adult.

Well she's been making popping noises W/ her throat.
& she's got stringy saliva.
& the vet X-ray showed water in her lungs.

My local breeder says it could be contagious but I was thinking it can't be.
If it was it's not that contagious.

They are in separate tanks I dont see how they could be contagious-- --- how did she come down w/ a RI-- ? Do they have her on a antibiotic to clear the RI up? I would give her no more baths---- did the vet tell you that?
I want some others on here to comment on this --- the more experienced than me

It would depend really on what the cause of the ri was.

But even if it was something contagious, the likelyhood of your younger dragon also getting it is pretty slim. Unless you are letting them be around each other or potentially handling one right after the other.

I wouldnt worry about it. If you're concerned at all, just wash your hands in between dealing with them.

Okay.
Basically I have a CHE above her now to help dry things up.
Her light will be on the normal cycle.
The vet didn't do much when they found out there was water in her lungs they just let me know.
I actually have a photo of said X-ray if you guys want to go to my uploads and see if you see anything.
The vet didn't get RI meds or nothing, the local breeder told me to try & dry out her lungs with the CHE.

EDIT:
So the temps are 120 basking log, 100 next to her basking log, & 92 in her hide.
I'm going to leave the CHE on all night & day.
Anyone have anything to add to my care regimen?

Your temps are too high.

I wouldnt let any part of the basking sit get over 110. For an adult I wouldn't let it get over 105.

Is 92 the coolest area of the tank? That is pretty dangerous as they need an area to cool off so hopefully I'm just reading that wrong :)

But do keep the che on at night. If you can keep nighttime temps around 80 that will help.

In regards to the pictures, we cant see other peoples uploads unless they actually post them in a post. So youd need to post the xray picture here to your thread for us to see it

& I dont know if the x-ray will be much help because I cant see anything
Here it's in this thread if you wanna take a look:https://www.beardeddragon.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=250685

Ok good! I was just worried that the cool end was that temp. 80 is a fine temp for the cool end :)

Basking at 112 is a little high but much better. Especially of there are areas to bask that are a bit lower.

Ok I see the x ray. It doesnt really say much to me but i noticed Tracie hasn't commented on it yet so hopefully she will later tonight.

How is your dragon doing today?

Did you ever get the cool end down a bit?

Hoping that things are starting to improve a little bit!

It's just what's the point
My psychiatrist told me all my reptiles would die.
That's literally what she told me.

I can't own a dog or it gets taken by my parents.
I mean, you would think I at the very least get offered a service dog?
But no my parent's want me to struggle.

Then my mom & dad baby my sister & she owns pets for years with no problems.
She doesn't even care for them! my parents do

Sounds like your psychiatrist needs to help you, not hinder you. He/she needs to stick to the subject matter before them. Unless you are a threat to your pets, they should not be saying things like that. Don't let it get you down.
As far as contagious goes, I really don't think so. They ARE treatable in most cases with great success.
The wonderful world of bearded dragons is a magical land of mystery, enchantment, cuddles, love and, worry! A mysterious realm where things always seem to change in an instant and, the moment you think you have it all figured out, the rules change! You think you own your dragon, guess again. You are now a slave!!!

Hello,

I completely agree. If your two dragons are housed separately, & as long as you handle
them separately & keep everything clean they should be fine.
If you do suspect a respiratory infection just try to keep the overnight temperatures to
around 80 or so. The daytime temperatures for basking are important for overall health so
be sure to keep them at or around 95-110 & lower humidity too. Your cooler end which is
around 80 during the daytime is good also.
Have you taken your dragon to the vet?

Okay.
I'm really worried about her.
Everytime it's one thing after another with her
& TBH I don't want to deal w 2 sick dragons.
I have taken her to the vet & they said she has water in her lungs according to x-ray
I'm afraid if things get too dry she'll get dehydrated & die

She's not eating
She's usually basking lately
She's supposed to be in brumation & brumating beardies don't bask
So that's a red flag
