Source for Driftwood/Grapevine?

Postby ComicBookMama » Sun Aug 25, 2019 2:15 pm

I'm looking for recommendations on where to find a good sized, gnarly chunk of grapevine or driftwood online... our local stores have butkus in terms of selection, mainly flat slabs of cork and straight sticks with no real climbing potential. I'd go to the Reptile Expo to pick some up in two weeks, but it seems a little silly to drive for an hour-plus, pay admission, and come away with nothing but a twisty stick.

My best friend got me a dragon-warming gift yesterday of a lovely large chunk of spider wood from an aquarium supply store, but it was embarrassingly expensive... for the next piece, I really don't want to break the bank. Where did you get your cage decor, and would you recommend the seller to others?

You're absolutely right. Why did we drive for an hour & a half each way, and come away with a hunk of cork bark? (And a stack of business cards, and FWIW, an idea of the businesses/people behind those names...) :D

I have found some beautiful pieces outdoors that I use in my enclosures. Look around in the woods or rivers/beaches in your area + see what you can find, preferably dry + clean but you can clean it yourself. Anything that fits in a oven can be put in a preheated 225 F for an hour . Just be sure it does not touch the heat elements. Here are a few that I got from outside :

What kind of wood are those, respectively?

I don't know, just collected it all as driftwood or logs that have been bleached out by the sun.

Very nice! To the river I go, then. Thanks for the tip!

Some that would make nice walking sticks, but nothing for Figment’s tank this trip. The nice gnarled pieces were all too big or too small. But it was fun looking! :)

Hmmm, if a stick is thick you can cut it in to a climbing branch size if you thought it would look good. But if you keep looking you may find something yet.

Yes, but the branches I found were more like logs... too much for my little hand saw! I'll keep searching... it's fun to do, and good exercise to boot. :)
