Is 10 per segment considered a treatable coccidia count? Some segments had zero, some one or two. Ten was the worst segment. If the average was 10 per segment should that be treated?

Hello,

Are you referring to the numbers per grid on the slide, or the "total" numbers on the entire
slide?
Are you treating your dragon for coccidia right now?

Yeah that was the number per grid on the slide. I did find out that was very high. I actually took him to a reptile "specialist" here in Houston and he completely missed the coccidia. My gut told me something wasn't right though so I took another fecal up to my sister's lab at her clinic (she is a tech and manages a vet clinic, but they don't do reptiles) and this is what we found. I am starting his treatment tomorrow morning and actually got the meds from your site, so thanks so much for that. I started him on the probiotics last evening and will get another dose in him today and then start the treatment in the morning. All in all he is actually doing really well and still gaining weight, so I have high hopes he will respond pretty well. I can tell he is depressed, a little lethargic, and I know his stomach hurts.

Hello Kyle,

Oh my, then since it was per grid then yes that is a high amount then!
Let me know how he does on the meds. The toltrazuril is a relatively gentle drug so it
shouldn't hurt his system. Hopefully the probiotics will do him good also!
That's too bad a vet completely missed the coccidia...how did that happen if he ran a
fecal on him?

I’m not really sure how he missed it. We were having trouble getting him to poo so when we went to vet he hadn’t gone in a week. He pulled poo from him but didn’t see anything. I actually looked through the scope at the fecal and it was definitely clean, but I think they just did a smear and no float.

He actually responded to the meds really well really quickly. I started him on the probiotics 3 days before first dose. Gave him first dose yesterday and he kinda sulked all day. Today he took a giant poo and came to life. He is already so much happier. He was chasing bugs all over his cage earlier and ate a whole bowl of salad. I think he ate 8 supers, a few silkworms and a bunch of bsf. Like night and day from one treatment and 24 hours. Gonna continue with daily f10 deep clean followed by steam clean of enclosure for the next 3 weeks probably and weekly fecals. Thanks so much for your help! I will definitely keep you posted

The other thing that tipped me off that the vet was clueless was that he told me Murdock was a female and he was certain of it, but he is most definitely a male. Luckily I have access to a lab so I can get diagnostic tests at will. I do have another Vet to try if needed again in the future though.

He had another great day today. Ate half his salad and another 8 supers. Still can’t get him to take silkworms, but he seems to be full of energy and really enjoying chasing stuff around again. Gonna get some dubias in the morning and see how he does with those. Maybe some hornworms too for extra hydration. He also was back to a normal basking routine today so he seems to be making great progress. Poos are already much more formed and solid as well. He has also gained 10 grams in the last week, but that being said losing weight was never an issue for him as he never turns down a hornworm even when he didn’t want to move much. The probiotic from Bug-de-lite has really made him happy I believe. He really enjoys drinking it lol

So just an update. Started treatment at 436g. Finished treatment a week or so ago. Weighed in tonight at 470g. Definitely has all his spunk back and is being his jerky self again. Got a turd in the fridge for a fecal in the morning so I’ll know what I’m working with in the morning, but at a minimum he is acting normal again. He is addicted to butterworms now however.......

What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
