Severe mbd?

We got our first bearded dragon just over a week ago and I noticed when she was picked up when we got her that her back legs poked upwards, like a spasm, then settled back down and she started walking etc so I assumed she was just stretching or something.

Since then she has deteriorated severly and cannot use any of her legs or hold her head up and keeps having what I think are seizures (her body goes stiff and she shakes slightly as her eyes roll and her mouth is open) after, she does some big deep breaths and appears to sleep. She has had at least 20 in the last 6 hours. She has also developed what looks like a hunched back.

We do not have a vet that specialises in reptiles anywhere near us, but our local vet, said she thinks its MBD, and has said to syringe feed her puree veggie mixed with calcium powder.

She has pooped today and it was very runny. She is under a heat light and has a brand new uvb light. She cannot move though so Im not sure how close I should keep her?

The breeder told us she was 3 months old. She has blocked me now though.

Basically what Im asking is does it sound like she will recover or am I just prolonging the inevitable?

Who was the breeder? Imo it's unlikely for MBD to progress to that extent in a 3 month time frame.

Actually MBD can definitely cause severe deformity pretty quickly and esp. once it has severe spasms [ that may have also come on if the dragon had ADV ] because the unnatural position of arching the back can fracture it . Poor little thing, I'd also like to know who the breeder was.

My partner got her off a kid who was selling them as his dragons were sexed incorrectly. My partner found it on gumtree so only had mobile phone contact.

Seizures are the most horrible thing I have ever seen. I feel awful I wasnt able to save her :(

Completely agree but that wasnt what I was stating. (Although I guess it could be interpreted that way) what I was trying to say was that it's very unlikely that a 3 month old dragon could develop mbd to that extent. I agree that once mbd sets in, deterioration can happen very quickly, but to actually get mbd and to get to the point where it is causing these symptoms is hard to imagine happening in a 3 month old baby.

I've known people who have raised clutches under no uvb at all and poor diets and none of the babies ever got that bad in such a time frame. Obviously you could imagine these dragons suffering later in life but 3 months is quick for that level of mbd to set in, imo.

Even if the breeder completely neglected their dragons (highly unlikely but it could happen) I cant see mbd progressing to this level in 3 short months of life.

What I'm trying to get at is there had to be another factor at play, in my opinion. And ADV is definitely a possibility.

Just saw this. I was under the assumption you bought from a more known breeder.
Still, hard for me to believe mbd could set in on a 3 month old like that. But if the kid really was neglecting the dragons I suppose it's possible, just not something I've personally seen. But this is a good lesson for all of us, which is to do your research on your breeder before hand.

I'm sorry you had to go through this :(
Hopefully it doesnt discourage you from keeping dragons.

What I meant is probably the same thing that happened here in this thread that I'm linking below. The bones are already soft + then a severe spasm causes them to break + deform. There is no way it can happen if the bones are of normal structure + strength. MBD causes these things pretty quickly. It's the seizures that caused the bones to become deformed as the body twisted unnaturally. Same with the beardies that very quickly develop turned in wrists. Here is the link :

He had multiple dragons and the older ones and other babies all looked completely healthy. So Im not sure .. I have only found this guy and a petshop selling them in my state, is there a group or something for reccommended breeders?

Yes, possibly a combination of atadenovirus and MBD. So sorry your baby ended up with such a serious problem + sad end. I'm really sorry you had to go through this. :(

So sad

Regardless of the reason, if you're able to contact the person who sold it to you, maybe you can discretely inquire about husbandry practices to see if there are more dragons potentially at risk from bad husbandry. If so, it might be possible to alert someone so that more poor beardies don't suffer.

What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

i feel so sad reading your about me 😢
Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
Taking my beardie for a walk
