Hello,

My daughter’s baby leatherback got attacked last week by her friend’s juvenile beardie. Baby lost right eye, has bruising and crooked bottom lip. I decided to take care of the little one as I missed having a beardie again since we lost our 9 years old German Giant last year.

Fury is doing a lot better, I have been bathing 3-4 x a day, basking temperature varies between 102-103 F, and cooler side between 75-80 F. At night leave ceramic lamp and temperature is 80 F, as house gets a bit cold. I also cover with blanket the side that Fury sleeps to have more darkness.

I have been feeding mealworms about 7-10 every 3-4 x day by gently opening mouth. Then I alternate with puréed veggies by syringe. I also cut in half small silk worms and tomato horned worms and able to feed them as well. Basically almost every 2 hours either getting bugs or veggie purée. Fury has more energy and looking better.

Before anyone asks me why I haven’t gone to vet, I fell last week and cannot move arm due to shoulder injury. Everyone else too scared to care for Fury as they don’t want to hurt him/her. As much pain I’m in , I bathe, feed and care for Fury.

I would like some ideas of nutritious purées I could make and any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

You would need to get some advice about the care for Fury from either Tracie Drache613 our vet moderator or AHBD --- they can give you medical advice--- sorry to hear you are in discomfort as well-------please keep your little one away from other bearded dragons--- they are a territorial animal - your lucky your little one wasnt killed --- but he now has battle scars -- is his beard black - that is a sign of distress--- oh and please NO more mealworms--- they are too hard on little ones digestive systems---- he should be eating bugs like crickets or dubia roaches dusted w/ calcium d3 5 x per week along w/ vitamins 2 x per week--- vegies like collard greens turnip greens mustard greens offered every day -- his basking temps are good -- how are you taking them? W/ a infrared heat gun? If no one responds w/ help on his medical please PM TracieDrache613 or AHBD-- they will be glad to help-- I hope your little one gets better but yes it would be best to take him in to a reptile vet --- just saying

Hello Karrie,

Thank you for input:)

Fury cannot really open up mouth to feed, because slightly crooked when head bitten, have been sliding in tiny mealworms to reduce trauma of force feeding. I know there’s damage to mouth but Fury a trouper and eating slowly.

I have ordered Phoenix worms from Reptilia (in Toronto) as they don’t have right now. One feeding will cut in half 2 small tomato horned worms and the same for silk worms but Fury won’t get mealworms then. He’s really not running around, that’s why didn’t give pinhead crickets.Because he has his one eye he or she really unsure. I have to help Fury eat as I don’t know about other eye. I also gently massage throat as saw a vet do that on YouTube to help them swallow.

Fury always calm for feeds, doesn’t turn black and belly always white. Throughout the day I place in lukewarm water and licks droplets. I give 3-5x to help with digestion and shedding on tail.

As for veggies that I feed by syringe ( it’s about 1cc total, so about 0.3 cc at alternating feeding), I put baby- kale/lettuce/spinach ( organic salad mix), tiny bit of boiled acorn squash and 1 or 2 raspberries, and water puréed in my vitamix. I started this yesterday, but found this today and Thinking of getting what she has and would like input if ok or not: https://youtu.be/hUZn6On7llw

For temperature, I have thermometers both sides of terrarium. Right now it’s a 10 gallon, I know very small but I have it like a “hospital “ for Fury. I have him out most of the day and after feed place him until light to digest as well. But Fury Close to me most of the time.

I will be getting a 40 gallon soon, as I cannot use Smaug’s enclosure. My daughter’s silkback that she rescued is in Smaug’s old enclosure which is a 3 foot x 3 foot. Tiamat is very happy there. Tiamat is nowhere near Fury, and I told my daughter’s friend never to bring Thor to house, as apparently he’s trying to attack his siblings.

Our Smaug was very picky eater mainly bugs and only raspberries and blueberry. Calcium dust would give him severe impaction so kinda nervous getting it, but I understand every reptile different. He died last year in May at age of 9, vet said he had tumour in leg. My beautiful baby boy was 27 inches long and I him miss a lot.

I baby Fury and also babying my Shadow (Great Dane/English mastiff mix) who is also not well, on top of my shoulder injury, lol.

Thank you again!!!

I really appreciate feedback:))

Fury in terrarium with ceramic heat lamp on, which makes the terrium about 70-80 F. I will weigh him tomorrow to see if gained any weight, Fury was about 10 grams on March 2nd.

My worry is If Fury will ever be able to eat on his/her own, but if I have to do this for rest of his life I have no problem to do so.

I cannot go to vet as really cannot drive from injury and my husband works. There aren’t many specialist for reptiles in Toronto there’s the Links Animal Clinic and Amhearst in Ajax or Oshawa. I will take Fury when I’m able but for now I have to do the best I can which he/she looks better from last week when he got injured.

Thank you so much for your care, kindness and concern :)))

Yes during the day basking temperature between 101-103 F with 75 watt bulb and UVB bulb is 10.0( temp on that side is between 75-80 F) the 100 watt heat bulb was too strong for small enclosure.

However at night cover terrarium partially no later than 9pm (mainly where Fury sleeps in covered) and remove both lamps and I place, on UVB side, ceramic heat also 75 watt bulb, as I also tried 100 watts ceramic bulb and too strong.

In the morning, around 7:30 turn off and remove ceramic lamp (which both thermometers show 80 F) and place back UVB lamp and basking lamp. Around 8:30-9am will start to feed bugs then 1.5-2 hrs later puréed veggies by syringe, etc..

I suggest swapping over to small silkworms (to about 1" long) from mealworms , they are very slow moving (easy for a disabled injured dragon to catch and eat) , highly nutritious and rich in calcium especially if fed fresh mulberry leaves (pretty good Ca/P if fed chow too), and very soft squishy (easy to eat) and will help keep up his hydration levels.

If silkworms are hard to find, small horn worms will do , or large but still soft and white BSFL (snip off their heads so no chewing is needed to get the innards out) . Butterworms ARE ALSO an option.

Could also try REPASHI GRUBPIE.

Really important to get protein into the injured dragon, so even soft worms like waxworms are better than nothing and better than mealworms.

I suggest also getting hold of some Calcivet liquid calcium , this can given via a syringe with a Teflon tube attached (see viewtopic.php?f=45&t=232687 for kit , 22G SureFlo Catheters (with needles removed) are excellent stress and pain free for getting meds and liquid calcium and liquid vitamins into a lizard who has a sore mouth or injured jaws) , the trick is to slip the plastic tube inbetween the lips at the back corner of the mouth - only needs to go in far enough to get past the teeth and rest on the tongue.

12g , so should have no problems making silkworms about 1" - 1.5" long disappear.

I will take more pictures when I come back (from doctor and Reptilia as husband going in later today to work). as I don’t want to be cause of bruising Fury from force feeding.

Fury won’t open mouth generally, will lick water droplets when I give bath. But feeding I have to gently pry lower jaw, but scared to hurt further.

Will send info and pics in about 2 hrs when back.

Thank you again!

Hello, I ordeded the repashi grubpie. I purchased Zilla omnivore mix, Repti-calcium and herptivite. Will make a small mix of those and purée in vitamix.

I cannot figure out how to upload more pictures of Fury. I’m worried that I may have cause bruising when I fed, now more nervous.

When you place live food doesn’t open mouth at all. My only option is when I give bath as opens a bit to take droplets.

Can someone give me more advice or link to see what else to do. Also if someone could direct me to upload more picture as it’s not letting me.

I will also through the board to see if anything similar.

Thank you!

Hello all,

I wanted thank you all who helped with Fury.

I wasn’t able to give update as our dog ended up having heart failure but now she’s stable. It’s been very hard on our family.

Fury is 15 grams and growing well. I have no choice but to feed mealworms which I dip in a purée (mixture of Zilla’s omnivore mix, a very tiny pinch of reptivitamin & rep-cal blended with pumpkin or squash) as Fury cannot eat on its own. I bathe 3-4 x a day and make sure drinks droplets.

Fury cannot gape mouth so not behaving like typical beardie, but content.

Thank you again!
