I NEED ADVICE!!!

Postby SammySpine9 » Tue Nov 21, 2017 12:32 am

I looked up information about my bearded dragon possibly having eye issues and came across this discussion viewtopic.php?f=45&t=95886. Only thing is that I have the recommended UVB bulb. ReptiSun 10.0. His eyes are fine, crystal clear no fogginess no cloudy whiteness anywhere. But my beardie keeps bumping into the glass of his enclosure. I don't know if this is because he is having eye issues or he is just testing out his enclosure. My beardie, Aegon, is a rescue. My friend who had been "dragon sitting" was friends with the person who rescued him. His original owner was mentally handicapped and couldn't properly take care of him.

He was never fed a proper diet and he only consumed Superworms from what I have been told. Once he was rescued my friend only had a 40 gal tank to place him in. Aegon is 18 inches long and was rather cramped for the several months he was with him. But now he is in a 36x36x18inch enclosure and has more than enough room.

However, he WILL NOT eat veggies. In fact, he walked right through his water and food bowls. I don't know if that was just because he didn't' care that they were there and they were just in his way, or, he didn't see them. I held a Dubia right by his eye and he didn't even go for it. I held some of his greens in front of him, or his eye, and ran them along with his lips but still nothing. I don't know if this is just him trying to adjust to his tank and I am just being paranoid as a first time Beardie mom or if there is something wrong. My friend took him to a vet that specialized in Reptiles and they said he had a few issues but he was placed on Anti-biotics and was okay.

We picked him up Saturday night and its Monday night now and he still hasn't eaten a thing. Does this happen often to Beardies who are adjusting to a new home? If anyone has any advice for a first time Beardie mom please send them my way.

Hi there, yes that is very common for them to be stressed, not eat and walk all over everything. They will even use their food or water bowl as toilets at times [ or the floor ] and walk right through that and " paint" the tank with it. " Glass-surfing " is a common term to describe the pacing and pawing at the glass.

Just give him time to settle in, he should be fine. :) BTW, what did the vet put him on antibiotics for, what is the name of it and for how long ? It's very important to know because many vets feel the need to " do something " and put the dragon on harsh antibiotx when they don't even need them.

Can you post pics of him [ full body shots ] as well as his tan + set up including lights ? Here's how :

The vet placed him on antibiotics because he had a bacterial infection. I actually just spoke to my freind and they gave it to him as a preventative rather than as a confirmed infection. If I am reading this correctly it says they gave him....Metronidazol (gen) 250mg tab and Enrofloxacin (Baytril).

Very common for a vet to give them antiobiotics for nothing. They said it was not a confirmed infection ? It happens here over + over again and actually can do far more harm than good. Is he still on them ? If so I wouldn't give him a drop more personally.

He is no longer on them. All I have that my friend gave me is the emergency food which is the ground up stuff you mix with water and his liquid calcium. I haven't used any of it yet because I have his powder calcium from Rep-Cal Calcium with Vit. D3.

What is his body condition ? Emergency supplements like Critical Care are used when a dragon is ill or hasn't eaten in a long time. It's perfectly normal for him not to eat for a few days or even more than a week or two when moving to a new home. What exact type + brand lights are you using ?

Can you post pics of him ? Pics will help a lot. If he's a decent size then he's going to be fine.Try not to worry, everything sounds normal behavior for an adult dragon in a new home. :)

The lights that I am currently using are #1 Reptile Products world Wide heat emitter for the head bulb i am using the Exo Terra basking lamp and the Reptisun UVB 10.0 bulb. His body condition is...good I believe. He seems to have a good amount of weight on him for a dragon his size. 18 inches from snout to tip of the tail. And he can move around perfectly fine so nothing wrong with his legs. So he seems to be healthy despite the fact that his owner he was "rescued from" only giving him Superworms. How does one post pictures on here? I am brand new here and never really figured that out XD

He looks reasonably healthy. :) Not too fat or thin, looks a wee bit tired but then his whole world has changed suddenly which is stressful and then the meds. may have upset his tummy a bit. BTW, L wood chips can cause impaction, you might want to look in to solid flooring like non adhesive shelf liner.

But he looks pretty good, give him time to settle in. Make sure his lighting is set up correctly....post pics of that as well.

Hello,

He does look pretty good! The reason he hasn't been eating is probably due to the medications
they had him on. I agree, I would take him off of the meds since there wasn't any confirmed
infection.
The Reptisun 10 tube should be 6-8 inches from him, mounted directly beside the basking light.
He should start to settle in soon, once he gets used to his new home.
