i'm scared of my baby beardie

Postby Dezzylove50 » Sun Oct 15, 2017 8:17 am

Hi, so this is my first time ever having a bearded dragon but I've held and been around them before so I wanted to get one of my own this is blade, I got him a week ago and I've only held him once(before I put him in his tank for the first time) I wasn't scared of him at first but since I put him in his tank he hasn't le me take him out I tried to pet him I even tried to let him get used to my hands being in the tank and letting him get used to my voice but when I go near him to pet him or pick him up he jumps at me and I get scared he's going to bite me I know this probably sounds silly since he's just a baby but I don't know what else to do so I'm hoping someone can help, how can I bond with him if he doesn't let me?

He's probably a bit scared himself given your size difference. I'd try earning some trust by offering treats of silk worms or black soldier fly larvae by hand and see if you can get him to come to you and eat from your hand. When you do try to pick him up, speak gently and move slowly. Come from in front of him and be sure to support both hands and feet at once so he feels stable. If you can bring him to a fun (safe) place to explore he may learn to really enjoy time out of the tank. Just take it slowly and don't push him too much. It's a balance between letting him adjust to his home and have his space and training him to explore and be comfortable around you. I'm sure you'll work out a good routine in time.

If you can, avoid feeding him pellets, at that age its better for them to have crickets/soft worms dusted with calcium
