Alucard's Journey

I'll try not to make this introduction too upsetting.

After the sudden and tragic passing of my two year old, Simon, I had an empty enclosure and a beardie sized hole in my heart.

Simon was buried in my front yard, and a red maple tree was planted on her grave site as a memorial. Richter came to show his respects. As time passes, this whole area will be converted into a beautiful garden in her honor. Rest in peace, Simon. You were truly loved.

I'm on day two now and am still grieving horribly, but if I could turn her empty enclosure into a great home for another dragon and give them a good life, why not start now.

Alucard has been introduced to the house. She will never replace Simon and she knows she has big shoes to fill. She was also taken out to pay her respects to Simon's memorial site. She is a normal morph little girl beardie, just like Simon, and has a lot of spunk and a big appetite.

She's about two months old, 8.5", and 32g.
She will inevitably lose the very tip of her tail, but it looks like this is healing well and will not cause her any concern.

I look forward to the love and laughter she brings to me and appreciate her presence turning Simon's home into something positive again.

Alucard fashioned herself a cricket hat while I went out to mow the lawn, and yes, I totally have video of her just looking around as it stayed totally still on her head. I promptly removed it after photos

Alucard's first time and she loved it!

At one point she was so brave as to puff her chin up at Richter, to which he responded with some furious head bobs, and she backed off and started waving. Brave little toaster. At no time was Alucard near Richter, just want to make this clear. She was always safely with me

Holy crap nuggets. Way too cute.

I mean, yeah... Alucard with the happy toasty dragon face, and the super baby cuteness and all the sexy leg going on and all that.....

But that sunbathing yoga pose outta Richter there... My favorite part. :D

Big day for Alucard! She had her very first veggie of bok choy and thought it was pretty OK, refused some butternut squash, and got a brand new artificial plant! I thought Richter's enclosure looked so nice because of the silk Ivy leaves and I was totally right. The new plant really looks nice!

She also got her brave little toaster face on at Richter.

I've also uploaded some more videos to YouTube. I see this being a more frequent thing now.

Here's the story of heartbreak. A young beardie going unnoticed after attempts to make contact:

And here's Richter running around the house just because:

Poor girl. What a rough life... Baskin in the sun, all the bugs and veggies you can eat, loving humans to cater to your every need... *sigh*

Waaay too many cute beardie videos, though! Seriously, cut it out.

Lol, the videos are far less appreciated on facebook, so I figured I may as well share with those who share the love!

She is such a curious and quick little girl. She's flying around her enclosure checking out everything several times, doing the full head tilt to look down, and each time I look at her she's in a totally different area within a second.

Hard to believe it hasn't even been two weeks

I hate to be the downer today, but thought this was worth sharing.
Yesterday, 5/18, was 2 weeks since I lost Simon. I can tell I am still far from fully healed, but each day gets a little bit easier.
Her memorial stone arrived yesterday, and just knowing what was inside was enough to bring back a wave of emotions. That being said, the stone is small (about fist sized) but beautiful, and I wanted to share:

This was custom engraved using my words by a company in the UK called Churchyard Angels (http://www.churchyardangels.com). I have this now added to Simon's garden, which is just about in bloom (her tree is budding and lillies are almost ready!)

Sadness aside, I also want to celebrate my 2 weeks with my little chickpea, Alucard.

I do truly love her, and so much about her reminds me of Simon as a baby. Her colors are just starting to come through, having been such a dark little baby, she's getting that mossy tan/yellow color on her now which should be a beautiful citrus in no time.

She really loves crickets more than dubia, often trying to stuff her face with more than one if she can, and is learning the breakfast routine. When her lights go out at night she prefers to hop down and lay on the floor of her enclosure to sleep, unsure why, but it's cute to know she has preferences and her unique personality is showing. She likes to lick the air when falling asleep and hug onto a finger if being held as she drifts off.

Her first vet checkup is next week Wednesday. She is going with to a reptile specialist with me and Richter to make sure she and he are good and healthy. I believe this vet has more experience with bearded dragons and is 45min away and can hopefully be my go-to vet in the future.

I was too sleepy to do the Friday night weigh in, so did it this morning.
She's up 10g since last week and grown 3/4" give or take since she'll be losing that tail tip.

She's been eating crickets, BSFL poppers, and bok choy

That little tail tip fell off on Wednesday night after returning home from her first vet checkup! It healed perfectly and looks like a perfectly natural tail. :D It was driving me nuts, like a loose tooth, so glad it's gone.

She is also in a full body shed minus her tail. I'm eager to see her coloring after it all pops off to see if she is showing any citrus coloring. She's still a very dark little girl.

Vet confirmed her and Richter both have coccidia :( but were prescribed some medication. I already figured Richter did, but I feel badly that she does as well, but hey, they're being treated :D She's a really good girl about it. She also has some pinworms, but not to the point of needing treatment.

Other than that, both dragons are very healthy. Alucard got the squishy belly test, mouth checked, and some limb tugging along with weight. Richter did as well and was called a monster, a t-rex, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the vet asked me to switch him over to a veggie heavy diet as he appears to be outgrowing himself too fast. He isn't overweight yet, but she's concerned he's so large it could lead to obesity in the future and asked his bugs be cut back. He loves his veggies anyway so he's happy to oblige.

Tomorrow is weigh/measure day for them both, but wanted to share the above information and some photos.

I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

i feel so sad reading your about me 😢
Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
