About Abusive Beardie Owners

Hi All,
So I really just wanted to vent here. My brother bought a Male 3 year old beardie 2-3 weeks ago and named him Mortimer. The beardie had been previously owned for literally 1 day before he was returned to the reptile shop. We've had great experiences from this shop in the past and they're really passionate about their reptiles. So when my brother chose out the only adult male, the sweet lady helping us mentioned that the beardie was previously owned and most likely abused. Apparently, these 18-20yr old guys had bought the beardie a week before we came in and tried to return him the day after they bought it. 24 hours. When they brought him back, there was red dust on his feet. The lady asked what it was and they laughed and told her it was from HOT CHEETOS. They apparently forced him to eat hot Cheetos. When the beardie was back in the shop, he didn't eat as much. He was extremely stressed out and became deficient in protein. The shop lady was concerned about him being stressed out also Bc of the female dragon that he could see also. So when my brother felt bad and ultimately asked how much it would be for him, she sold him highly discounted to us and with some needed food to help nurse him back to health. When we brought him home, he started doing really well for about a week or so and then suddenly he just stopped eating. He got really lethargic and we tried everything to get him back. Maybe it was the bulb? We got a new one (reptisun ofc). Maybe he was dehydrated? Bathtimes twice daily. Maybe it was too cold? Got a higher wattage basking bulb.Maybe he didn't like the feeders anymore? Served more variety of insects and veggies. We tried so much for the poor guy. Finally, we planned a vet visit and the reptile specialist was only in 3 days out of the week. A day before our visit, poor Mortimer ended up dying. When we talked to the shop lady about it, she apologized profusely. We were so focused on nursing the the poor guy back to health that we didn't even think about the obvious issue and probable cause. The hot cheetos could've possibly burned up his tummy or have caused other severe internal issues that we missed. Dragons are notorious for masking their pain and also, there might have been more things that they did to Mortimer that we don't know about. It's so infuriating though that there are people out there that do things like this. They harm sweet, defenseless creatures for fun. I don't understand it at all but people like that don't deserve to be loved by anyone. What gets me the most is that they spent $100 on Mortimer just to abuse him. Just to have some fun, force feed him cheetos, and bring him back when he didn't willingly do what they wanted. I'd understand it more if it was a child ignorantly acting like that, but grown-ass men? People like that deserve to rot.

Name and shame the toe-rags and publically punish them in the most humiliating way possible (personally I'd be in favour of bringing back the stocks and public floggings and would go as far as saying they should be strung up by their cobblers as well).

Sadistic a***wipes is what they are.

That is so sad. I am glad he was in your care when he went to heaven who knows what they would have done if he passed away while in their care. I could never imagine someone being that selfless and uncaring. We are new beardie owners and I am so worried about every little thing that seems out of the normal and want to make sure its taken care of immediately if she is sick. I couldn't imagine ever ever imagine someone doing something mean, abusing or not trying to get the beardie help if something seemed off.

You were a blessing to him even if it was for a short time.

Having the a beardie to care for is NOT A RIGHT but a PRIVILEGE, you really need to introduce very tough licencing requirements like we have here in Australia where :
-- you must apply for a keepers' licence to have a reptile as a pet (this licence is not cheap, and is issued by the state government)
-- you must show your current licence to buy a reptile , no licence , no purchase (illegal)
-- you must comply with husbandry standards and maintain detailed records for all your reptiles.

This means people can't just walk into a shop and buy a reptile on a whim and walk out the doors with it no questions asked if they have cash or a credit card. It also forces keepers to bone up on husbandry requirements and they are held accountable.

You are a lot nicer than I would be.

Poor, poor Mortimer. At least he died loved. I don't even have a beardie (yet) but it always makes me so infuriated when pets are bought and treated like they were toys. I don't have a clue about the laws in your area (I'm Finnish) but I wonder if those guys could be reported to the police for animal abuse or something?

If he's in the U.S. only a select few places would take abuse of a reptile seriously. If it isn't cuddly and furry most people could give less of a crap about it. I'm glad my vet here in texas is passionate about all animals, when I took my leopard gecko there once they took his name and info just like he was a child :)

Mine does that too. When i call my vet they ask for her name, she also has spots specifically for exotics and not dogs/cats. They even call and check up on her.

That's exactly how they do it at mine to! For the first time going to an exotic animal vet it was a great experience. Didn't know what to expect lol If Abra my beardie ever gets sick at least I know who to take him to now!

I'm in California and I'm not sure about the laws for that. I honestly don't think it'd be taken seriously though bc it's not a cat or dog

Hello,

I can't even comment because I am so mad & dumbfounded of the obtuse minded people & cruelty. They will have Karma come back on them, one day. I am so sorry about Mortimer, his little soul passed too early. At least he had you at the end.

That is so heartbreaking to hear. But it sounds like the little one had a lot of love in it's last days, which always makes a difference.

People like that don't deserve to own any living creature, there really ought to be stricter laws on animal abuse.

Firstly, I'm really sorry you lost Mortimer, hugs.
Secondly, that pet shop owner should have washed the stuff off the animals feet and taken him straight to the vet, she knew there was something wrong, she told you so and I would report her for negligence too. Sorry but I have a zero tolerance policy on animals, kids, disabled, elderly and any darn thing that can't defend iyself.

Thirdly, make her give up the names of those fkwits who abused the poor creature so we can deal with them like the did in "Hostile". :O

Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
