Hi
About a month ago someone offered to sell me a 18 month old female they didn't want anymore. I didn't want another beardie so my son took her. He's an adult & lives with me so I knew he would look after her. We are in the process of getting her a bigger viv & replacing her lighting ( UV is a t8 & is at least 15 months old). She showed no signs if being gravid wasnt digging but had been off her food for a couple of days & had been a bit grumpy put this down to her temps as the viv she came in is too small for her & with our heatwave the gradient wasn't good. Got in from work yesterday & she had laid 18 eggs 11 if which were plump & looked viable. & after checking with the previous owners daughter found out she was regularly let out in lounge unsupervised with a 12 month old male. Now I'm still a newbie I don't have the knowledge to raise babies so I did what I thought was the responsible thing & froze the eggs!! But now I feel so guilty & I know she's probably going to have several more clutches so will have to do it again! I think I'm doing the right thing so why do I feel so bad?

Sorry its a bit if a ramble

It's never a nice thing to do but sometimes it's the only choice especially if you don't have the time and resources to incubate the eggs. One of my local reptile shops will take the eggs and incubate them for you and when they are born they will either give them to you to raise of they will raise them for you and when they sell them on will split the money with you. Is there a reptile shop you could chat to in your area?

Hi Michael
Thanks for reply.
There are 2 reptile centres close by but both buy their reptiles in & only stock 1 or 2 at a time because of space they always only have 1 beardie to an enclosure. Its not about time or money (my husband is home all day so could do feeds) it's more about knowledge I'm still learning everyday about looking after my juvenille male & now I'm having to take a crash course with an 18 month old egg laying female. When we took chump in I didn't expect to be in this position as we keep her & Randall in separate rooms & although they have met they are completely indifferent to eachother. We have no intentions of breeding them.

Freezing the eggs before they begging to develop is the responsible thing to do. It would be even more tragic to struggle with and loose eggs due to unpreparedness, have poorly babies or struggle to raise and feed and house them. Not to mention finding good and loving homes for the little ones...

Thanks Taterbug
I'm feeling better about my decision now! Still a little guilty but know its for the best.

I almost did the same, the breeder we got a male and female off of housed them together the day of the expo and in tht time they got it on, she laid a clutch I kept then was thinking of freezing the second (fast forward that clutch is about to hatch) but I believe AHBD on here told me that essentially they are just a nucleus with veins, no pain center or even a working nervous system or anything so it is just like a chicken egg. Won't grow until incubated and that's also why it's best to freeze and halt permanently the development. We have 16 baby beardies running around and 23 eggs in the incubator and a possible 3rd clutch we will definitely be freezing as we won't have an expo to sell them at. I know how you feel, i hate doing that kind of a thing (I just lost the last egg we were hoping would hatch, opened to make sure it wasn't a deformity and saw a healthy formed hatchling that just didn't make it, I cried to say the least) but know it truly is better then them not being able to find homes or being short on knowledge :) I'm still learning and researching nightly to make sure I'm doing everything right as we didn't expect these babies. Best of luck, feed that girl lots if extra calcium dusted yummies and she will bounce back!

Thanks tigeress.
Chump is eating everything in sight so all is good.
We don't seem to have reptiles expos in the UK. I spend all my spare time researching to look after Randall & now helping my son with Chump & I'm happy with that.

Glad to hear :) and yea I hear the Uk doesn't have much. Neither do we here in canada, I'm lucky I live 2 hours from Toronto where all the expos are held.

Anything decent for reptiles is awkward here. To get a proper reptile specialist we have to travel about 60 miles only good thing is its a vet emergency hospital so at least we can get 24 hr advice.

That's crazy. We have an exotics specialist in our little town but it's mainly mammal or bird exotics. She does know her stuff when it comes to common reptiles as we lost a gecko to impaction and what she told us helped a little before he passed.

I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

i feel so sad reading your about me 😢
Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
