Maesie: Growing up =)

Hello everyone! I figured while I did introduce Maesie over in the intro forums, here would be a good place to post about her and her milestones and growing up.
I bought Maesie at a mall petstore on December 20th(Winter Solstice Eve!), and couldn't be happier with her!

Basically I'll post a bunch of pictures of her and track her growth and all that fun stuff. Right now she is 15.5 grams and she is 7 and a half inches long. I'm looking forward to seeing if she'll grow as fast as Scout did, who grew half an inch a week when he was her age! (I'm guessing she's about 2 months old.)

Right now she's waiting for me to take her out so I can feed her roachies, but this is how I find her sitting currently

If she leans back any further, she might fall!

Anyway, I'm definitely looking forward to experiencing all the fun of a growing beardie again. =) I last had a beardie this small when I was 13, when I had gotten Scout. (I'm almost 18 now) When we got Riza, she was already an adult, so this should be a lot of fun!

Yeah, she does look pretty small in there, even though the tank is only a 29 gallon since I've not gotten her a 40g yet. Today Maes was trying to look tough against Scout and puffed up his body and beard!! I've never seen a little one flare its beard out before, but Scout IS kinda intimdating! It looked like it was trying to blacken its beard too as the lower half of it was all dark and grey and stress-marky.

Scout also is still 558 grams, which is a tiny bit of progress since I started dieting him. He's lost about 10 grams. Slow progress, but I wouldn't want him losing weight too fast!!

Next Friday I go to the tattoo parlour to see about talking to one of the artists about doing a tattoo of my boy Scout for my 18th birthday. =) Hopefully you can make appointments when you're not 18 but for when you're 18 haha
I'm going to get a tattoo of his head on the front of my shoulder/under my left collarbone. I couldn't imagine being without Scout, so now I'll have a reminder of him with me all the time =)

The tattoo should be pretty cool. I post pictures all the time of my boys on facebook. Everyone is so sick of seeing them. They keep asking if my partner and i will ever have kids so we can post pictures of them. But they don't realize my boys are my babies. i have uromastyx named shuji and a beardie named kaisei. By the way love the name maes hughes if maesie is a boy.

Heh, yeah, I always post pics of them on facebook. Actually the pics you see on here I first upload to facebook since it's easier than photobucket (though sometimes I don't share the pictures with everyone and just upload them where I can only see them).

And one of these I'll use for a reference for the tattoo. I don't know which way he needs to be facing though for going on my left upper torso.

Also I don't have pictures of this, but Maesie's face is all itchy due to shedding and she started rubbing her face on her basking log haha. It was super cute! I can't wait to see her colours after shedding!

I was taking Maes out of his viv the other day and he caught a view of Scout in the cage next door(he can't regularly see Scout due to a painting and blankets obstructing the view), and this was his reaction, along with flattening out his body and standing on his toes:

Poor lil dragon! I didn't know they could flare out and partially blacken their beards like this though!

SO, unless something else changes in the future, I am officially declaring Maes a MALE! Using the flashlight technique, I can see a couple of lines where hemipenes would be, so right now he looks like a boy! Unless my eyes are playing trick on me. My flashlight is very bright, but it's the only good LED one I have that works for the task. I tried the flashlight technique on Scout to compare, but... his tail is WAY too thick and no light really gets through where it's needed haha

But Maes also seems to have some external lumps developing under his tail, so we'll see =) I'm hoping he's a male. It'll be my second or third male beardie I've met in person. All the others I seem to meet are female! I do prefer Scout's temperment over the temperment of the female dragons I've met and cared for (Riza, and George, a dragon I baby sat for a week)... I have a hard time reading the females to know what they want. The girls have been more snuggly than Scout I've noticed(Scout goes through phases of being clingy, and other phases where he wants to run around and NOT sit with me. )

Anyway, I'm excited to see what happens. So far the baby's grown about an inch since I got him, and I've almost had him for a month, so right now he is growing at the same rate Scout did when he was his age.

Yesterday was my 18th birthday and I got the start of my tattoo! It was something I had decided I wanted about a month back and got it scheduled a week or so ago, so I went in yesterday and got it started! It was a three hour session and my artist was surprised I lasted as long as I did with it being my first tattoo in the place where I was getting it

Here's the reference:

My artist is using an upped contrast version of the picture so we can get better colours into the tattoo. Right now it just has the undertones mostly so it's very soft. In 3 weeks I go back to get it hopefully finished!

He did haha

I still can't believe how black he can make his beard for still being only 3-4 months old! I feel bad whenever he spots Scout since he's so freaked out by the big guy

Someone didn't look like he wanted to get out of bed

And then of course after these pics he slid out of his kleenax box to eat his squash and mustard greens, but I'm happy to see him eating salad!

I thought it was adorable how he was eating his salad/pureed squash yesterday morning:

Hey there everyone! It's been awhile since I've posted. =) All the dragons are doing well and Hughes is getting bigger and more colorful! He was being stubborn with eating, but I realised that it's because the bugs I was offering him were too small. I've been offering him bugs that are as wide as between his eyes, and while he's gotta chew those ones up a lot more, he likes them more.

He's about 9 inches long now, and his back started shedding. He already shed his head, legs, and tail, and now his back is clouding up. Yesterday I gave him mustard greens and pumpkin puree for a salad and took him off his basking branch so he could see the salad and he ended up stepping in it and getting pumpkin all over his toes. So when I came back later, he was on his branch and the pumpkin had dried on his toes, and I went to say hi, putting my finger in the cage and wiggling it (which is how I say hi to him haha) and then I touched his pumpkin toes and he lifted his hand up, looked at his toes, and BIT THEM! I put my finger in the way of his mouth so he couldn't bite his toes more, and then he started chompin' on my finger and those little guys have sharp teeth! So quickly I soaked his toes in the sink so I could get the pumpkin off and then gave him some bugs haha
All is well and he still has all his toes.

He also thinks my tattoo is a real beardie when he can see it.

I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

i feel so sad reading your about me 😢
Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
