Irwin has Coccidia...

...again. When I first got him (about a year and a half ago), he had it, along with pinworms and giardia. And the vet bill was crazy. He got healed up and everything, but about 3 months ago, I sent in a fecal sample and they said that he had coccidia again. So, yet again, I bought the medicine and fed it to him. But I noticed no improvement, and now, 3 months later, he's refusing to eat. Sometimes he'll have his eyes wide open and he'll be active, but he's been acting very sleepy and lazy lately, and he will not defecate at all, unless I put him in the bath and rub his belly.
I suspect he still has coccidia, but I currently have no money for the vet. Until I can get the money, I'll have to try and help him on my own. So does anyone know of any home remedies or natural medicines that can help him in the meantime?

Hello,

Did you use a probiotic during the medication rounds? That is usually a huge help during that time as meds really disturb their GI tract & their normal flora of bacteria in their tummy enough to where it affects the appetite.
Did the vet tell you what his counts of coccidia are?
What type of substrate is he on? Make sure to take everything out of the tank & clean it really well. Replace with cardboard items for basking platforms, etc, instead of his regular rocks & decor. That way, everything will stay more clean. Use alot of paper towels, too as they are easy to replace.
What do you use to clean with? A steamer is usually the best thing to kill coccidia with. Wiping down with nolvasan is good, but it doesn't kill coccidia spores unfortunately. If you could get him to poop in bathwater daily, that would cut down on the levels, drastically.
Parazap is used by quite a few people to help cutdown on coccidia & worms, but, it does not kill them. It basically just helps their body get rid of excess debris in their GI tract which in turn eliminates the coccidia & worms out with the stools. It helps to basically clean out their system. You can try that. Alot of people will use it a few times per year, but only use it 5-7 days at a time. Use oral fluids with it too, as it tends to dehydrate them as well.

Good luck.

Thanks very much! I'll look into your suggestions. The vet didn't tell me the count, he just said that there was coccidia in the fecal sample, and that he suspected there may have been a little bit of giardia as well, but he wasn't sure.
I'm positive that Irwin isn't brumating, because he's never done it before, and he's had similar symptoms when he was sick. I just checked on his cage temps though, and apparently there's something wrong with his ceramic heating fixture. I used to be able to adjust the heat emitted from the bulb, but the cheap thing broke, and, even with a 100 watt bulb, the thermometer says that it's about 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and that's at the very top of the enclosure. It must have stopped working about a week ago. So now I have to replace the fixture. Let's hope that that will fix the problem...

I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

i feel so sad reading your about me 😢
Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
