Nematode ova and cocidia

Hi my baby beardie 14 weeks old, has recently completed a 10 day course of sulfatrim for Coccidia, latest faceal teat which was collected 2 days after sulfatrim finished shows coccidia and nematode ova, my question is should I treat the nemotode first before retreating the coccidia or treat them both together. She is not eating and hasn’t ate for 3 weeks I am maintaining her weight by force feeding her critical care and blended bugs. Many thanks

Hi Linzi, sorry to hear this. First off, how was her appetite before starting the meds ? I ask because the sulfa drugs are very harsh, esp. for a baby and can cause lack of appetite. I wouldn't give her any more sulfatrim at all. Many vets are VERY slow to get on the newer, better med. to treat coccidia which you can actually get right here....

This drug has been used by many members here and usually knocks out the coccidia in about 2 doses. I highly recommend it, and most other members here would as well. How big is your dragon, can you post a few pics of her as well as a few of her entire set up [ including the lights ] just in case anything needs to be adjusted ?

We had only had her about 3 weeks when she stopped eating and passed blood in stool. Took her to vet who gave sulfatrim and wormer, without a faecal ( I now know he should not of done this), faecal results today say scanty nematodes and scanty coccidia, spoke with specialist vet who said theese low levels do not need treating, and would not cause her to not eat, so I’m wondering if the not eating is now an after affect of the meds, last sulfatrim was last Tuesday and panacur thursday. She’s in 4x2x2 viv, On ceramic tile, has an Arcadia 14% bulb and Ceramic heat emitter. Basking spot is between 100-110, I have already ordered baycox 2.5% from bearded dragon org but now I’m not sure if she needs it for scanty levels and if it will make matters worse with her appetite. She is 14 weeks old, was 46g before stopped eating dropped to 37g but I have now managed to get her weight back up to 42g initially force feeding her Emeraid critical care ms for past two days I have been feeding her blended roaches, calci worms and locust. I’m am a total loss because I now don’t know if she’s poorly with something else or just not eating following the meds although she wasn’t eating before them however the blood in stool appears to have stopped.

She looks very good ! Your tank is perfectly decorated, too. :) Thankfully the vet knows that low levels are O.K. You've done a good job of getting nutrition in to her, keep that up with a bit of extra hydration mixed in and she should come around after a bit. Just be patient and she should resume eating after a while.

Some people use a probiotic to help restore the gut flora that the meds. wipe out.

The Baycox should keep for a while in case you need it in the future or maybe you could cancel the order ?

Thanks, the baycox has been dispatched and arrived in the UK so I will just hold onto it in case she needs it, do you agree scanty levels do not need treating. I have been giving her probiotic and reptiboost baths, todays faecal showed heavy mixed growth of normal faceal flora. How long would u expect it to take her start eating again. The vet said he saw know reason why she shouldn’t eat and said the sulfatrim would not affect her appetite !!!!! He said to give a bit time and if she doesn’t pick up to her bloods to check for adenovirous I have read up on this and it has me worried sick in case she has it, although she doesn’t stargaze ir appear too unwell.

The probiotic + Reptiboost must be given orally, she can't absorb them in the bath. I do agree that low levels need not be treated, esp. now ....she needs a break from the meds.

No need to be afraid that it's adeno, but there is also a test for that.

Well Luna is still not eating, it’s been over 5 weeks now, I’m wondering if she has forgot how to eat. Had another faceal done no nematode ova this time just moderate coccidia, she had 2 doses of baycox last week last dose was Thursday blood still in poo but only tiny amounts, poop has formed up, she is going daily, has been having probiotics from a syringe, regular baths. But just won’t eat on her own she is taking blended roaches and Calci worms from the syringe twice a day I have stopped force feeding her and just giving her what she will take willing which is not much, but she is maintains her weight at around 48g. I have even tried not feeding her for a day to see if she will eat on her own but that didn’t work. I am at a total loss with her. Will she ever eat again ?? Shall I just keep syringe feeding her in the hope she will eat one day ??

Do you think I should just continue with the syringe feeds ?? Will she just eat again one day, it’s been five weeks since she ate on her own.

Try this, although it's a bit gross. Smash an insect until the guts come out a bit and rub it lightly on her snout. That will usually get them to eat....then drop the next smashed one in a bowl with other live insects right in her sight. If they are hoppy like crickets, shake them up in a jar pretty hard so they are weak + dizzy [ just a few at a time ] and they cant's jump out of the bowl or crawl away quickly.

Yeah I tried that but she wasn’t interested, when I show her the food she just looks at it, sometimes even licks her lips but just won’t eat.

Now I have been faced with a massive dilemma after speaking to the owner of the exotics shop we bought her from they have said they have had word from the breeders that there has been reports of problems with the clutch she came from and the suppliers have reimbursed all shops the clutch was dispatched to. As some have died, some are passing blood and remain unwell despite best treatments. They have offered me to take her back and replace her with a healthy dragon. I really don’t know what to do I have became very attached to her but I think it’s clear she is not well.

That's a tough call. There may not be much you can do if it's a genetic issue. If you have an experienced vet to help with treatment, I'd consult them and discuss options and possible outcomes. If you have the resources available to help and have bonded, it may be worth putting up a fight.

What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
