Tiredness after coccidia treatment?

Postby imcallumwbu » Mon Jul 29, 2013 2:50 pm

[TOPIC AUTO-LOCKED DUE TO INACTIVITY]

Hi there,

My female bearded dragon seemed really ill with runny poos and smelly poos etc which i presumed was coccidia, so I gave her some medication for coccidia (tolturazil or something from beardeddragon.co) and followed the instructions that came with it, now a week after the meds her poos seem to be less smelly and less like diarrea, but she still sleeps most of the day and when she is awake her eyes just look terrible and ill. Does anyone know what his could be? My male also sleeps a small amouny during the day but when he is awake he does not look ill at all, always bright eyed and active, unlike the female who is droopy eyed and lethargic. Any help?

Thanks in advance

Hello! I have literally just experienced this with my beardie. For a couple of weeks the life was just sucked out of her and so I took her to the vets and it was in fact coccidia, he gave us medication to treat it but after another period of two weeks she still was so helpless. Took her back to the vets and the coccidia was back at a normal level but he said he thought there was something internally wrong with her so he did a blood test. We went to the vets about an hour ago for the blood results and it turns out the coccidia was hiding a virus which is why she was not improving after the medicine. And now she has had some swabs done and they have being sent of to a reptile specialist lab in Germany. She has hepatitis and her liver is failing :( she is on critical care medicine and a special liver care medicine, It might be worth getting a blood test for your dragon to see if it is a similar problem? It is so awful when they are ill :( hope this helps and keep me informed!

Oh no! I was thinking that after the coccidia symptoms had cleared up she was still sleepy so I presumed she had pinworm, but wasnt quite sure. I have no idea who to go to for blood tests or anything as where I live there is not any reptile specialists nearby. What has the costs been so far for treatment amd blood tests etc? Im willing to get her what she needs as I do with both beardies, but I dont want to be shocked when I get hit with the price.

Also, my beardie has not been eating latley, i waved crickets infront of her face yesterday and she only ate two, and she sleeps all day! Does your beardie do this?

Thanks for the help and best of luck with the tests

Yes when we went to the vets to see if the coccidia medicine had worked he said she had worms and that there was something going wrong internally. The blood test cost £90 and then today it cost £102 to send her swabs to Germany and get her critical liver care medicine so it has being really expensive but she is insured and I can't just not do it for her because otherwise she would not have a chance. The vet said if she starts to get worse and her liver does not improve then she has to be put to sleep. When he said that I literally fell to the floor in tears, I have only had her since January and she is only 10 months old so its really heartbreaking because all I want is to see her live a really happy and healthy long life so it is all really difficult and upsetting to process at the moment. But I find coming on here and talking to other people really helps because some really can understand and relate to what you are going through. My beardie has not eaten anything for 2 months. She is on critical care which is basically powder that we have to mix with water and it gives her everything she needs so she wont lose anymore weight, when she had the coccidia treatment in just two weeks she lost 10% of her body weight, poor baby isn't having a lot of luck :( Mine doesnt sleep all day she is really really active, she just cant eat by herself so have to syringe it for her.

No problem at all, sounds like your beardie is going through what my little one is, thank you!

Yeah, ive had mine since she was about 2-3 inches and now shes up to 16.5" and shes only 6 months, she was really healthy and growing good but all of a sudden her health just went downhill, she sleeps most of the day and when she is awake she just basks and looks lifless. Its heartbreaking because when I got her I was like you wanting to give her the best life possible. My besrdie isnt insured which is a bit of a downer and im jobless so money is scarse, but ill find a way to pay the vets fees, i couldnt live with myself if I did nothing to help her, poor little girl :(
