Coccidia :(

I had to post quickly because I feel like I am going to burst into tears any second :( 2 weeks ago I took my little girl to the vet (she has just turned 10 months old) everything was positive about her (weight, length, general health and appearance) but when the vet did a fecal sample it came back that the level of coccidia in her system was higher than what it should be :( he gave me the medicine BAYCOX and I had to give it to her for 3 days, I stopped it last monday and now she has really lost her appetite :( she still is very active and alert, i'm just so scared. I gave her some Soya yoghurt today because I have read that it is good to give them the good bacteria back that they lose with the medication. I just feel so afraid that I am going to lose her :( You read all sorts of posts that people have posted about the parasite and in worst cases the dragon has passed :( I just feel so upset and afraid.

Hi there,

Try not to worry too much. Thats not a very common medicine to give to treat coccidia in reptiles. It's more of a farm animal-type medication. Is your doctor a reptile specialist? Curiously, what was the dosage for the 3 days?

Either way, I am sure your little girl will be fine. Medicines (especially coccidia treatments) are usually always harsh on the system... Adding some good gut flora back into your dragons system is a great idea (the soy yogurt).

I would also be giving daily bathes to help keep her hydrated.
As long as her set up is fine, there really should be no reason why she won't recover.

You can try feeding her some squash baby food. That will at least get some good nutrients into her.

A drug called ponazuril worked very well for my bearded dragon. It almost eliminated coccidia in my bearded dragon from a single treatment.

I had never even heard of it but yeah he is a reptile specialist, should I be worried about that?
Yeah she had quite a good amount of soy yoghurt last night so going to give her some more today, hopefully she will perk up more :)
Yep baths aswell are a great idea right now! Yeah my mum gave her some butternut squash all mashed up the other day while I was at work and my mum said when she put it in the enclosure she just dived on it and ate most of it so il try her with some more of that aswell. thank you for your advice :)

The dosage was also 0.4 each day for three days, but not the 0.4 that is like half way down the syringe. the 0.4 that is right at the top

Hi there, I noticed you were giving her yogurt to replace the good gut flora, on my post you said she was ill with a liver virus, you should look online foe some probitoics for lizards, I got some with the coccidia treatment for my beardie and youjust give them three drops once or twice a day, its a really good idea to buy some, it will help re-build her strength too as since mine has been taking probiotics shes just been so much healthyer, beside the fact she has an illness I cant work out and I cant afford the vets at the moment :(

Regards

Yeah before we could find out if the coccidia was treated I gave her yoghurt but then when we went to the vets and she had her blood test he told us to stop the yoghurt because she was going to start on her critical care. Yeah I will look in to that, thank you!

Hopefully your beardie will pull through, if she does its still a good idea to buy those probiotic drops because you can give them it any time and ensures they always have a healthy gut. Keep us posted on how she does and what the results are though! (Y)

What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
