If their nails start cutting you, then you can clip them a bit. Just a little bit of the sharp bit at the end. They use them for climbing though so I try to leave them alone when possible.
I think regular vet visits are a good idea. It will give the vet a baseline which may make it easier to determine if something is wrong. It also helps you establish a relationship with a vet so you can build some trust and familiarity which can be helpful.
