Mouth Rot advice

Hey guys,

Been awhile since I have posted but I suspect my beardie to have a slight case of mouth rot. I took him to the vet a few months ago and the vet said he had the start of mouth rot and gave me a series of 7 injections of antibiotics and some diluted antiseptic scrub I was to use on the outside of his mouth "as needed". I have been looking for a good vet that is also fairly affordable. Quite frankly I did not like this vet I went to. He was just rambling away and did not really give me any information during the time he was examining my beardie. Anyway, I finished the treatment but i still see some dark grey spots on his lip area.

I have heard that there might be some home remedies for mouth rot. I was wondering if this is true. I do not like putting him on antibiotics. Especially if it is something I can treat at home. I have read that it is a build up of unwanted bacteria so my logic thinks that there should be another way to rid the bacteria from his mouth. Almost like us using mouthwash.

Any suggestions at this point are welcomed. The vet I went to was 45min away and charged me over $260 for an exam and some meds.

This is a topical rinse that will help keep bacteria at bay. Just put some on a q-tip and rub it along the affected areas.

Can you post some photos of him and his mouth? Dark grey spots aren't necessarily bad but I'd like to take a look if possible.

Compare prices, maybe the Co. I listed has a better deal if shipping price is the same or comparable. :)

I might be able to get some pics when I get home from work tonight.

And if you are talking about bearededdragons.co I do not and will never shop off there again. I got really screwed over by the owners with the purchase of a sick dragon. I don't mind paying a little more in my case.

Thanks you guys so much. I really appreciate the help

Missing the link ? I see it on my post, it's California Pet Pharmacy. Not beardeddragon.co

Oh well, who knows what's going on there. :) But yes, that's the company I thought I put up there Cooper.

A few thoughts to add - if it's not serious the maxiguard might be worth a try but do keep In mind home remedies can be a bit risky if they are ineffective since you waste time and resources.... with respect to mouth rot - it is an infection and depending on how bad and what is involved it can be more serious than an oral rinse can help with. Also it can spread unseen into the jaw bones, eyes etc. it's good to avoid overuse of antibiotics but some things really need them.

Hopefully the treatment helped and it's still just a bit slow to clear up. If not and especially if it gets worse I would look for another vet before wasting too much effort with home remedies.

Also make sure your other husbandry is on point - a stressed animal will have a harder time recovering and a generally weaker predisposition to illness.

Here are 2 pictures. He was actually quite polite about this. But idk what that she'd like stuff is. It's hard. Not like she'd. And then you can see a little of the grey stuff on his lip.

Thanks again guys

Is it just the crusty bits along the outside? If so, that may not be a big deal. A bigger concern would be wounds or blisters along the gums or tongue inside his mouth.

Yeah it was the crusty parts and the black spots on his lips. I thought the black might indicate early srmtages of mouth rot. And since the vet never told me why HE thought my dragon had mouth rot I am left to form my own conclusions.

That just looks like some minor irritation to me. It may be a good idea to have a culture grown or an x-ray taken to see if there is a harmful infection going on but I'd try the MaxiGuard first and see if that helps clear it up. Keep an eye on his gums, teeth, and tongue for any signs of irritation or wounds.

What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.

Clapton is acclimating okay I think. He's quick as lightning so I'm not sure how much I should bring him out of his house yet. He's not at all interested in his salad though. I wonder if I should change what I'm giving him. Least he's eating his crickets.

Things to do:
Buy calcium powder
Material to raise surface for basking spot
Scenery decals for back of tank
