Hornworms and black beard

Odd I would think he would be wanting to eat them --- anything else that he can see that would be causing the black beard --? a cat? a dog? birds? reflection?

There are also super worms but other than that the closest thing would be birds out my window

I would say its the birds -- try covering up the side that he can see and watch the behavior then--- birds are a predator
