Bearded Dragon Digging like Crazy!

Hello,

I own a 3-4 year old Bearded Dragon named Pippin. I usually let him run around in the back yard under a close eye to get some exercise and sun (I live in California so it’s almost always beardie temperature). Recently, he’s begun an excavation project, and now is the only thing he focuses on. He tries to do it in his tank as well, although nothing has been changed (diet, temp, and regular exercise has all remained the same). Do you have any idea how to curb this behavior or what is causing it? It doesn’t seem very healthy but he is gaining quite a bit of muscle.

What is causing it is instinct, which is one of the more difficult kinds of behavior to curb, but you are correct that behavioral modification is the solution. How are his claws/nails? Are they perhaps too long--inducing him to dig in order to maintain them?

If he were a she, I'm pretty sure you would've seen eggs long before 3-4 years.

Your mention of an excavation project reminded me... In HS (early '70s), I raised/trained a couple of male mutt puppies (GSD mixes from different parents). That summer, we had to have a water heater replaced, and the old one had to sit in the back yard until pickup day. During that week, the two pups (more like doggie adolescents/teens)--working together--managed to dig a trench around and under the water heater, eventually causing it to drop over a foot into the ground. We joked about how they must not have liked it in their yard, so they were trying to bury it. :dontknow:

The muscle comment reminds me of the first "fancy" hamster we had that used to stand on top of her wheel and try to push the screened top up off her aquarium to escape--up-down-up-down-up-down. We had to weight it down, first with a book, then two books, then a brick... Eventually, she began to look a little like Sylvester Schwarzenegger, with ENORMOUS arms... :laughhard:

Sorry about all the reminiscing; I've been using the time spent typing to think about your question.

As far as outside, I would move his exercise area away from where he's digging so he can't continue. Some type of fence/pen/barrier may be required.

Inside, what type of substrate is in his enclosure? My own dragon--ZᴀRDᴏZ--occasionally scritches at his rough tile substrate, which kind of takes care of dissuading his digging by itself. He never gets anywhere, so gives up rather quickly (though he continues to try to open the sliding glass doors, which is building his arms up pretty well too :laughing6:).

Rough tile floor/substrate should dissuade the behavior (not instantly--it may take a while), and should keep his claws/nails maintained so you won't have to trim them. :D

Marti, please do check to see if your dragon is a female, that's the first thing to rule out for your dragon's sake. Despite what Mr. Spektrum incorrectly assumes, quite a few females lay their first clutches after 3-4 yrs. of age. I've included some examples below in the links.

As for digging, some males will dig like that but you'd be surprised at how many owners discover their male was a female all along. Mr. Spektrum, you are a newbie dragon owner and nice of you to try + help people but there are many things you don't know about. Many dragons go for years without laying, the oldest one I knew of was 9 years old.
Here's one that laid at 8 years old for the first time. I've bred dragons since the 90's so I don't have to guess about these things . :)

And tile is really not an answer, beardies love to dig and are far more fulfilled, both male + female, when they have a dig box in their tank. Both males + females will burn off lots of energy doing this natural behavior that would be what they do in the wild.

Firstly, I definitely recommend verifying that your dragon is in fact a male. If you could post up a sexing picture that would at least make me and AHBD feel better lol. Because I too think it's highly suspect.

That being said, males can and will dig too. In the wild all sexes would likely dig a hole like that to brumate in. Has yours brumated yet?

Honestly, even if we find out your guy really is a guy, there is no reason to curb the behavior IMO. They were born to run free and explore and dig and climb. They have got so sedentary in our care, it's good for them to get out and dig and burn some energy.

But Definitely verify you don't have a female on your hands, because if yours is a female and you don't provide her the environment she needs to lay her eggs, some serious health complications can occur.

as well as The Bearded Dragon Manual, 4 veterinarians (2 of them herp vets) in my immediate family or that I have had friendships with for 40+ years, and numerous other sources I have read but not listed here ALL AGREE that Central Bearded Dragons reach sexual maturity at or before 24 months--some younger. Many of these sources also note/agree that sexual maturity depends more on size than on age. These citations include--but do not comprise the entirety of--sources I have read/studied about bearded dragons--most before I began caring for one.

All I said was
I'm pretty sure you would've seen eggs long before 3-4 years.
I very rarely speak in absolutes, and I haven't here. If anyone has made any assumptions, it hasn't been me. The fact that there are anomalous exceptions doesn't alter that my statement holds true for the vast majority of BDs, and certainly doesn't rule out anomalous exceptions.

I apologize for misspelling your name, that was unintentional. As for the 2 threads I cited, those were not mine. I simply replied to them and I know of + have met other people who's dragons laid eggs for the first time late in life.

Females can definitely lay eggs for the first time late in life. Not all females will produce infertile eggs at all in their lifetime, and sexual maturity doesn't really dictate a timeframe either for when or if a dragon will create eggs. Really, it's an unknown.

One of my old girls, Naughtica, laid her first clutch of infertile eggs at the age of 4 or 5. She had never done that before. Although she did breed when she was younger, and only for a relatively short time, there was years in between her breeding, and her laying infertile eggs for the first time.
I've also had females who NEVER once produced eggs at all.

So it's definitely a possibility, if this is a female, that she could be producing her first eggs at her age.. ASSUMING she is in fact a female. She could be a male. But that's why we are all up in arms about the gender :)

It is the first check to be done, as it's an easy check, and dictates the advice that needs to be given.

But at this point, we are getting off topic from the OPs original request. Enough has been said about whether or not a dragon can lay eggs for the first time years into it's life.
From here on, lets not let the topic drift anymore, per forum rules.
