There are a few reasons, some for her, some for me.

I will name my reasonings in no particular order of importance.

1. It's been nearly 15 years since I last used sand. I want to try it again now that I feel more experienced and come to my own conclusions on it as opposed to following common opinion.

2. I do think it provides enrichment. But is the enrichment>risk? That will be determined.

3. I was hoping mainly that it would excite Moro and wake her from her slumber and get her more active. She's never been very active. Even if the activity was just digging, I want to see her more active. I'm hoping sand can help.

4. If she is going to continue to brumate, at least the sand will give her something comfy to dig into.

There are probably a few more reasons, but those are my main ones.

Ok so checked back on Moro and I excitedly see a mound of sand piled near the basking site. She's been exploring and digging!

I quickly realize it looks like she was trying to dig a cave of sorts, and gave up in that location..

So where do I find her? Back under her favorite log, pressed up against the rocks.

However, it doesn't end there.

I check back on her 10 minutes later, and this girl is digging herself a cave down to china.
Honestly It's bitter sweet because on one hand, she's digging like a mad woman which is what I wanted, some activity out of her. But on the other hand, she's digging for 1 of two reasons at this point.
1. To dig herself a nice cozy little hole to brumate in.
2. To lay eggs.

Eggs would be a very big surprise to me, she doesn't have the body size IMO to be producing eggs, but stranger things have happened. It's a possibility but a slim one. IF she has been gravid this whole time, that might also explain some of her sluggish behavior... But once again, extremely doubtful.

Her digging away

Her stopping to give me the look. I should be getting thanks!

Anyways, We will see what happens. So far, sand is exciting me and I think it's exciting her. I hope I don't wake up to eggs in the morning.

I also have some Suki pictures like requested and promised, sorry it took all day!

She nearly bit my fingers off, I had to distract her with one hand and scoop her up with the other to avoid getting bit. She's one ravenous and hungry eater!

Here she is checking out Moro and her digging shenanigans.

On second thought, maybe I shouldn't have given Suki the idea...

She was bribed with a half dozen supers though :)

And, for accountability sake, if you all don't see a new thread by me in regards to natural brumation behavior, pester me to do it. I've been putting it off for 2 weeks :study:

Brandon delivered on the pictures. Nice to see Suki feeling like a powerful hungry dragon, ha ha.

I do hope Moro continues to have fun digging. That sand looks like a nice texture and holds some shape. Was there some clay in it to help make that work?

Suki is gorgeous! Moro looks like she's enjoying the dig though, for whatever reason. That's certainly a more natural action. I can see making a viv with 1/2 sand - 1/2 tile for a larger Dragon. Seems like they would enjoy it.

It's actually just a bit damp still. However I do like the idea of it semi holding it's shape. Might look into it more.

Thanks Dee.

What's interesting and what I was thinking about last night as I lay in bed, Moro has never seen sand in her life. I know because Daichu houses there dragons in melamine enclosures with solid substrate. And she never hand sand with me. But within minutes, she knew how to dig and started to dig.
Digging, is a natural behavior for them. And I do think it's beneficial to them to be able to dig. Nothing else really explains the instant know how.

Babies are born and know how to suck to get milk. Dragons are born and know how to dig.. LOL.

Anyways, she ended up curling around in her "cave" she dug last night, it was the cutest thing.

Moro definitely has a look akin to happiness with that sand nap

I agree, she has seemed happier to me. Even more active. Although the bar isn't set high for exactly how active she needs to be to be "more" active than she was! LOL.

Thanks Vanessa :) Moro quite enjoyed the digging too it seems.

Sleeping dragons sure are cute :)

Well, it's been a few more days. Moro has been a bit more active. She hasn't really done anymore digging. She's made herself quite a little home under her branch that contours to her body well. She just lays in it now. She's been up and about more though. She ate her whole salad (albeit it was a smaller than normal salad as she's been letting most go to waste) and had a few small superworms.

She was a little upset last night as her cool side was too warm. (she gets a bit dark when she's unhappy). Her cool side was 88. It's hard to keep her tank cool. Tombo's tank being below hers really warms up her tank. She only has a 40w basking bulb in her tank to keep her temps. And bigger vents. I might look into a fan vent to force cooler air in. We will see.

Kiki has been doing great too. She has a huge appetite.

Tombo is weird. He is active and "Alert" but it's like he's always focused on something else. Like his hormones are wild and he's chasing that invisible girl dragon in his tank.

Mei seems to be coming out of her semi brumation. She's been up on her basking brick more often. Still looking a bit slow.

And Suki didn't slow down for 1 second.

Oh, and I finally posted the article I've been meaning to get up. If anyone is interested, it's on the subject of brumation, and has cool pictures lol.

That is a neat brumation piece. Don't have anything really constructive to add to it.

I was wondering more of the sand you got Brandon. When I look around for normal playsand none is as finely textured as what you have pictured. That brumation article also had a smooth looking pale sand. The sand I see is light and dark brown, with obvious pebble chunks in it. I haven't tried ordering any online.

claudiusx wrote:Everyone got some explore time yesterday.

Tombo came out first, and instantly became super territorial and black bearded at seeing all the girls lol. Head bobbing, body inflating, the whole nine yards. Hes definitely a man's man. Until you go and try to pick him up and he tries to squirm away like a little baby! :laughing6:

After Tombo went back in, I let Moro out to explore the room. Of course her fascination with the two new girls drew her right to them. The girls seemed more eager to get to her than Moro did.
I decided to let Suki out with Moro. It was their first time out together so I was super cautious. There was a few scares where Suki went over to Moro and looked like she wanted to eat her tail, but she just licked it a few times. Moro is always so calm she just sat there.

Then I decided to bring Mei out also. So the 3 girls were out. Mei is a lot more timid and jumpy than the rest. She was more so trying to glass dance to get back in her tank.

Here I am concerned about how the two girls will interact with Moro when out of no where with no warning, Suki lunges at Mei's face and tries to bite her. Instantly they were separated and Mei didnt have any cuts or broken skin. She didnt even seem top bothered by it but it was definitely scary. That was enough for them so they all went back in their homes lol. Goes to show you though that things can change in an instant, and you should always supervise multiple dragons.

Anyways, here is a picture of the trouble maker trying to act all innocent with her pose.

Here's one a bit closer of her partial eclipsed eye.

Thanks glad you liked it. Figured it would at least be interesting.

About the sand, it most likely is the same sand you are seeing at your stores. The playsand is typically a mix of some of the finer material and some of the "larger" pebbles. And since it was slightly damp, it looked darker than it really is, and looked finer than it actually is as all the fine particles stuck around as opposed to sifting down in between the larger.

Thanks Selkie, they are "sisters" :)

Appreciate that brumation article. Found it very interesting.
Made me wonder if there was some neglect or if 'we' are entirely too protective. Like you've said many times, like raising kids.

I think you hit the nail on the head Dee.

Everyone has their own opinions on what is right. And a lot of times, there are multiple right opinions even if they differ. The key is realizing that just because someone does something different than you doesn't make them wrong.

But I mean shoot, sometimes people are just flat out WRONG! LOL... but hey..

Reminds me of this picture:

Which also brings up this picture... not really related to the point I was making but funny and thought-provoking nevertheless LOL.
