Hi all
I am new to this group but need advice. My son's beardie hasn't eaten for couple of days. Yesterday morning he had a large hard poo and since that he is not himself his beard is permanently black and his dragging his back legs and when you hold them they feel weak with no resistance. We thought he may be impacted so was giving him baths yesterday and he was straining to go but nothing was coming out. So today he still no better so have taken him to out of hours vet , who has x-rayed him and gave him pain killers. The x-ray results show no mass or impaction and no broken bones. He is in good general healtg other than that. His just not himself very lafargic and just closed his eyes constantly. If anyone has got any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi
Thanks for your reply , I did wonder about UV , he did have an Arcadia 12% T8 , but I have replaced that with an Arcadia T5 12% today so hopefully that helps , we feed him on locusts which we have done since we had him he is 3 years old, my son did give him some wax worms as a treat bout a week ago so I'm wondering if it's them upset him, it's strange that x-ray shows no blockages or anything. His basking spot is set at between 32 and 36 degrees Celsius , his always got fresh salad every day mainly curly kale although he rarely eats his salad and never really has . One thing we have noticed today is he has left a yellow liquid faeces in his Viv on log and in his carrier from vets but it's a small drop or smudge

Sorry forgot to say uv is inside Viv at the top towards the back wall, it's a 4x2x2 Viv and it's a 3ft UV T5 tube

Is there a reflector on the UVB? Distance should be 12-15 inches from basking decor directly over head

Hi , yes he has reflector on old system plus on the new system and distance is between 12 to 15 inches , I really don't want to lose him his my boys best friend but he seems so weak and back legs are worrying me, hopefully the new UV will help him over the next few days

Can you post pics of him please - why did the vet give him pain killers? Have you given him the pain killers? And what pain killer did he give you? I am flagging your post to AHBD but I need you to post pics of him and his tank and lighting -- it will help us see better what is going on w/ him -

Hi
Sadly our boy Bruce died this morning , still none the wiser as to why. He was a lively energetic boy up until about 4 days ago, but he went downhill so quickly literally fine one minute , completely different the next morning, found lots of the yellowy discharge again all over his Viv this morning, but he could not even move his front legs today. He was is good shape hadn't list wait etc, still had large fat stores in tail and on head. So completely confused as to why he died. I have a completely heartbroken family now

I am so sorry about Bruce  they do that fine one day and completely gone the next :( Tracie might have some insight as to why - I will flag your post to her and she can maybe give some answers to the yellow stuff -- again I am so sorry ---

I’m not a vet or an authority on this, but it sounds like he had a parasitic infection. Unfortunately parasites can’t be prevented in beardies because they have evolved to just hitch rides on vector species (bugs and plants) so they can then wind up in their target host. The yellow discharge sounds like his body was flushing his intestines out, but if he was dragging his hind legs, it’s possible the infection could’ve entered his nervous system. It’s really sad and you did the most you could do, but it sounds like that vet didn’t do a thorough job finding the source.

Hello,

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear about Bruce, that is too bad. It is devastating when they
decline that quickly & are then just gone, just like that.
You are sure Bruce was male & not female? I ask just to be sure you didn't have an egg bound
female.
It is essentially impossible to know the exact cause of death, without doing a necropsy really.
So that is up to you.
I am very sorry for your loss.

Tracie

I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
I miss you so much, Amaris 💔
What is a quick way to warm up a cold beardie? His heating element went out overnight and now he's very cold.
