Power Outages

Postby xAnaBooo » Sun Jan 06, 2019 11:25 am

Hi, there is a mass power outage in my area, and we might not have power until later today or a couple days. My beardie is a little 6 month old baby and is shy of me so I can't pick him up and take care of him, what can I do? I might have a power generator but it's not promised. Please answer as quickly as you can, I don't have internet at home and I'll be home in 2 and a half hours. Thank you!

You could get some of those hand warmer packets that you break to activate.

Hi there, what are the temp. outside as well as in your house ? If it's warm out he'll be fine but do not feed him. You CAN use handwarmers but they get almost 160 F so you have to wrap them up + tape the edges so the beardie can not come in contact with them or will get severely burned.

It is around 40-50° F, not very warm. I do have heat packs and a blanket i could wrap him in, but i dont know if he would let me help him into it. My house might be around 50-60.

It's tough when they don't want to be handled. Otherwise you could just pick him up and let him take some body heat. They generally are OK for a while at room temp in the house and will just slow down or sleep if they get too cold. It shouldn't cause long term harm. Since you have some hand warmers, wrap them in a towel or blanket so they are just barely warm to the touch and put those in his tank. If he wants to warm up he can scoot toward them. Otherwise he's likely to just bunker down and sleep.

For longer term planning, it's good to have some reptile shipping warmers on hand. They don't get quite as hot as hand warmers and they last a good 48 hours or so. If you can get a computer battery backup those are nice for short outages because you can plug the lights into it and keep them going for a while. The more battery you can buy the longer they run of course.

Thank you so much, I saw those online and was planning on buying some but I figured he might not use that soon anyways. As long as he doesn't die, and will be semi-okay, I won't be overly worried. I'll try the blanket, and see if by any slim chance he'll want to come and cuddle up next to me. Thank you.

I wouldn't worry about him dying. They are tough little critters and are designed to just kind of shut down when they get cold. Do your best to keep him warm and comfortable but don't stress about it a whole lot.

We almost lost power last night to! Had a crazy wind storm. We stocked up on hand warmers at Costco :) one of my beardies is fond of cuddles the other would rather scratch my body to shreds and go shiver in a corner. What a drama queen! Did you get things all sorted? Best of luck!

Hahaha! Sounds like a struggle. Yeah, he slept for a while, or at least pretended to. He always sleeps under his paper towel, and I didn't wanna disturb him because that would make things more complicated if he woke up. But I believe we have power now! I spent the whole day out. Poor baby, must have thought the night lasted forever!

I got home and he's awake, just sitting there. He must be pretty scared and confused. Should I leave the lights off for the night? Or turn them on and gradually adjust his schedule? He's got about 11 hours to go until they're supposed to go on.

I'd leave them off and just let them return to their normal schedule tomorrow.
